Fuzzy Resolutions in non-WMP players

I've had this problem for a while now where video files look really bad in players that aren't Windows Media Player. This is fine for the most part since I installed that codec pack for Vista 64, but when I have a .mpeg file, I find myself in a bit of a bind. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Players tried so far (not including WMP):
VLC
Zoom Player
Media Player Classic
Quicktime

Have you had a look at the screen resolution then player is using?

...no. I was under the impression that players auto-adjust to fit the screen, as has been the case with these programs on every other computer on which I've used them. Is there a way to manually adjust something like VLC Player?
