Given the widespread availability of free solutions, we know how power users hate to pay for security software. If you fall into this category, your options will become slightly more robust this Tuesday, November 18.

According to a spattering of reports, a company spokeswoman for Check Point said the company plans to celebrate its 15th anniversary by giving away a 1-year subscription to its ZoneAlarm Pro software security suite. For those not familiar with the program, ZoneAlarm Pro expands on the company's popular firewall solution by throwing in a spyware remover, protection against rootkits, ID theft protection, and other security odds and ends. The full program typically sells for $40/year.

If the reports hold true, you can download your copy from this link beginning at 6:00 AM US PDT time (8 AM Central) Tuesday morning. Procrastinators be warned, the link will only stay active for 24 hours.

Funny thing is I stopped using ZA and bought a 2 year license for Online Armor but then I got Vista in July and OA didn't have a Vista version fully ready so I just went with the Vista firewall and even though they now have the Vista version I just haven't got around to putting it on here, just call me chicken don't want to mess things up :D

While this is a good deal I just don't really plan on using it or needing it... I will pass

The license they give you only lasts for one year. I suppose its better than nothing.
What bothers me is how they give you a download link but its just a link to their downloader file.
I would have liked a link to the actual installer.

Yea, Zone Alarm stopped making 64 bit versions Vista was released, I think. I remember it being available for XP 64 bit, but never Vista.

I used Zone Alarm a few years ago - horrible! It practically did whatever it fancied, blocking ports you'd specifically said to open, etc.

My ISP provides Zone Alarm Pro as part of its high speed internet package. I could get it for free to use on up to 3 computers. Problem is that not only does it suck like a vaccuum, it is not compatible with my 64 bit machine. So I use AVG Pro instead. (BTW - Zone Alarm Pro is both firewall and anti-virus).

pfft - I stopped using ZA back with Windows 98 when it hosed your system if you tried to uninstall it.

When Comodo users complained about the same thing recently, I could only sit back and reflect that making a product that was great in terms of protecting you only went so far if it became such an intricate part of your system that there was no way to remove it, without metastasizing an integral part of your system along with it....

Now, I just say "Firewall? We don't need no stinking firewall...."
