Flickering screen...I can't take it anymore!

Okay...I'm not sure where to post this because I don't know what's causing it. Hope this is the right place.

I've had a flickering screen since I got the computer new. It really looks like a window is trying to flash open, then closes. It's irregular in its timing, but some times three or four times in a couple of seconds, and sometimes several seconds or a minute in between. I've found that if I reboot, it sometimes will stay away for awhile. It's really driving me insane. Please, please, please, somebody help me!

I have a Dell with an ATI radeon x1300. I updated the drivers to no avail. I have one monitor on the digital output where all my icons and clock etc are at (this one is flickering), and a second monitor on the analog output. The second monitor doesn't flicker, but it looks like this is because the flickering background window doesn't span over to that monitor. Any ideas?

do you have onboard graphics or a card?

If you have a card you need to match the refresh rates of both your monitor and the vid card.
