Flavius's fix got me to install latest windows updates, but then the issue reappeared

A couple of questions:

I am beginning to conclude that I have a root kit somewhere which is disabling windows update, which is not being detected by Avast,

I tried the malwarebytes, even though it said not for Vista x64, and while scanning, the system froze at mmcndmgr.dll, which could be an issue.

What are the minimum required checked boxes which should be allowed through the windows firewall?

what does anyone know about mmcndmgr.dll? that i haven't found by googling it?

I have Vista original, and service pack 2, can i do a clean install of vista x64 business, original, and use sp2 to get back to my current state?

If so, where are the hotfix files stored, such that I can save my current downloaded updates, so that I don't have to go on line to redownload them to get to a clean install current state?

thanks

I have suggested that posters use Malwarebytes. It can be used on Vista 64 bit.

RichC

If you read my post closely, malwarebytes froze my machine on mmcndmgr.dll, so that's why there is a problem that's deeper than malwarebytes can handle. . .

Re: Flavius's fix got me to install latest windows updates, but then the issue reappe

I did read your post and it said this:

I tried the malwarebytes, even though it said not for Vista x64, and while scanning, the system froze at mmcndmgr.dll, which could be an issue.

And I do agree that could be the issue.

My only point was that Malwarebytes can be used with Vista. Nonetheless, it could be part or all of the problem. Im sorry if I misunderstood your meaning.

But I suggest, that we try to get you up and running again, that is really the important thing.

Ill see what I can find out about
mmcndmgr.dll That might be the best place to start. At least we will know what we are up against.

Re: Flavius's fix got me to install latest windows updates, but then the issue reappe

I could not find out much more about mmcndmgr.dll than you probably already know.

My suggestion, if you think that there is some type of malware, root kit in you system, and you cannot get rid of it, post in the security forum. There is nothing that can be done until we eliminate the root kit.

If you still can, after the Malwarebytes issue, since you did not mention Microsoft Security Essentials, you can give that a try.

House call, has a free online scan. I will get you the link for that. In the event you want to give that a try when you are able..

Be sure that the scan is approriate for your computer. I have used it myself.

Re: Flavius's fix got me to install latest windows updates, but then the issue reappe

Well,

Something changed! When I went to the Malwarebytes site, it said the following
Support for Windows 2000, XP, Vista (32-bit).

I went back today and it said
Support for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 (32-bit and 64-bit).

So i redownloaded it, and ran the scan.
This time it only came up with a false positive, common for Vista x64.

So, I don't have any malware, and my machine runs fine, EXCEPT, I can't use windows update, unless I use the aggressive prep tool and then reregister all the dll's.

So, RichC, we were both right, or something changed, as I originally took your advice from another post.

I was tempted to reformat and do a clean install, but with an active RAID setup on the data disks, i didn't want to chance it right now. . .
