Solved Files Don't Appear On Desktop

Hey every1

I just bought this new ASUS laptop and it's amazing. It runs a Windows Vista Home Permium 64-bit version. However, one problem I am facing since the first time I opened the laptop is that files don't appear on the desktop. They are there because I tried to copy a file twice to the desktop and I was told that there is already a file. I tried to look for posts here but couldn't find anything that went through the same issue.

Sometimes when the laptop first loads the files on the desktop appear but only for several seconds and then they go away again.

Does any1 know a solution to the problem ? thx !

hey ken

yeah I did look there and everything is there, they are just not visible on the desktop screen. So every time I want to open something that's on the desktop I would have to go through the sequence you provided.

by the way, I don't know if this will help but I know it won't hurt:
Like I said in the main post when I first load the laptop the files appear for several seconds but then disappear from the desktop. However, during the moments that they are visible, another thing (shady black thingy with an analog clock and news reports) isn't visible. When the files disappear the shady black thingy appears. you haven't installed any sort of dock, animated desktop, screensaver, or anything else?

If you boot into safe mode do you see the desktop? (F8 on boot)

hey ken

no I haven't installed anything. The problem occurred the first time I loaded the laptop, without any additions from me.

I tried the safe mode method, it worked, the desktop files were visible and I was able to access them.

no I don't have a second moniter. I used "Prt Sc SysRq" (Print Screen) key on the keyboard to get a a shot of the desktop

Would you conduct a search on your hard drive for downloaded files?

Also, right click on graphic in your browser and select "save as". Select different directories including desktop and let us know what happens.

Lemur is of course correct as usual. Im thinking some video artifact. It doesn't load in safe (no vid driver). Do you have an antivirus with current definitions? might be time for a scan

Now for the fun stuff. can you go into search and type msconfig. go to the start up tab. is there anything in there that you didint instal (MS stuff is ok)

then go to general and click the diagsostic start up with services and drivers only. Reboot ok or not ok?

When I download the files i personally specify their location everytime and I put them in a personal folder on mine on the desktop, which I can only access if I go to START >> My Computer >> c >> etc...
As for the image, I saved one the desktop, it's doesn't display on the desktop screen but it is there when I go thru the scenerio mentioned above. The images I save on other locations are there and have no problem occurring with them.

The laptop is only 2 days old, and the problem wasn't a result of something I did or downloaded because like I said it came with the laptop (if you can say that). My antivirus is avira and it's on active gaurd + I never downloaded anything suspecious or visited suspecious websites.

As for the ms config, I really dont know how to read it so I don't know what things I installed or not, but here's is a picture, i hope it helps :

As for the start up stuff, when I did what you told me, the files on the desktop appeared. I then switched it back to normal. However, the surprise was that they still appeared, so I decided to restart it one more time to make sure, but again they were gone  when will this madness stop

Hey Dwarf

you know, I feel pretty dumb right now. Turns out the flaw was in the option "Show Desktop Icon". Even though it was already checked, the files didn't appear. But I unchecked it and checked it again, and now they appear. So basically problem solved :D

Thx !

by the way, just as a side note. The problem hasn't been completely fixed. It seems that every time I load the laptop the desktop files don't appear even though when I check the view setting it shows that "Show on files on desktop" is checked. So I have to uncheck it then check it again for the files to appear.
