File sharing with W7

Hi,

Am running Vista on my main PC but recently bought a laptop with W7 on it. Now I've added it to my home network I can access files on the laptop from the PC, but not the other way round. I keep getting told I don't have permission. Workgroup names are the same and all of the settings on both computers seems to be right (sharing on, password protection off, network discovery on). Disabling IPV6 was required to get laptop access from the PC but it didn't work the other way round.

Have spent a good deal of time on the W7 forum and seem to have exhausted all possibilities. The advice from the experts there was that it sounds like a Vista settings issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

This may seem strange but with mixed Vista/XP/W7 home Lan what I do is just use the public folders. For example if I want to copy a video file from Vista to W7 machine I map the \\MachineName\Public\Users to a drive letter after both machines are running. Then I just drag & drop to x:\Public Videos\

The strange thing is, once it is set up this way, if I want to share a folder that's not public, I just share it and add Everyone as CoOwner.. then unshare when done with it.

I think where you run into problems is trying to share the whole drive. Then it gets tacky about wanting you to use passwords. It's a pita but I seem to have the least problems doing it this way.

Somehow I seemed to have solved my issue as well. XP can happily see the Vista files simply by entering the network address of the Vista PC into Windows Explorer. Once I had re-employed password protection on Vista the W7 laptop just asked for the username and password and was straight in. When I tried to do the same in reverse on W7/Vista it failed horribly, but then I took the password protection off again from the laptop and the Vista PC could see the files.

I was only ever looking to share "MY Documents" type files and I'm not sure that it's set up as it should be, but so long as it works I'll leave it alone! :D

Thanks to all who offered assistance. I'll be back when it stops working again!
