File Association Problems........

I run Vista Ultimate and after uninstalling Google Chrome I can no longer use my desktop shortcuts to web pages on the net. When I click on any short cut a message comes up...

"This file does not have a program associated with it for preforming this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

Have tried to fix this problem without luck.

Thanks for any help :)

Hi try this
A. If your computer configuration has been corrupted and executable files no longer behave correctly perform the following from the command prompt (cmd.exe)
C:\> assoc .exe=exefile
C:\> ftype exefile="%1" %*

Hello Aaries, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It sounds like Internet Explorer is not set as the default browser program. Check to make sure that Internet Explorer is set as the default program with all of it's associations set for it in Default Programs.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Brink, thanks for your help. I have set Internet Explorer as the default program and still receive the same message when I try to use the desktop shortcuts to the net.

Ok, see if you can right click on the desktop internet shortcut and click on Open With, then select Internet Explorer to have it open with it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi Shawn, when I right click on the icon it only gives a "open" option not "open with" so I can not choose Internet Explorer.....thanks again.

My Computer

Humm, ok. In Default Programs, check the manual default associations for Internet Explorer to see if they are all checked.

As a test, create a new internet shortcut to see if it may work instead of the others.

Hi again Shawn,

I have gone into Default Programs/Set Program Access and Computer Defaults.

Web browser: is set to Internet Explorer

Enable access: is set to Internet Explorer

(hope I have checked in the right place)

I created a new shortcut and placed it on the desktop, it's still not working. :)
