Hi BugBuster,

I think I may know the problem I had something similar with FarCry its not actually a Vista problem just a wierd glitch I suppose when it installs. have a look to in the log file in your steam directory and see if it mentions msvcp71.dll and/or msvcr71.dll

no don't place them in system32 for some reason they didn't initiate there for me copy them to the folder of the main executable of FarCry and that should sort it for you.

You will need both files for it to work fully, it is mentioned in the second link I posted.

Go for it. Makes the game look better and play better, and the best part is now pretty much all of us have the hardware to run the game it was meant to be played; max settings and resolution.

I've got an odd problem with Farcry...

About a year ago, I had Farcry installed on my Vista Ultimate x64 machine and it ran without issues. Well after a clean reinstall of the OS sometime ago, I recently decided to reinstall Farcry and give it a go again. Well now the game simply refuses to run without graphical corruption...I'm talking the whole screen is nothing but one giant black & white blob! I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, trying it with and without the patch, with and without the AMD 64 bit patch...same result...graphical corruption.

Other then the OS reinstall, the only thing that changed in my system besides MS updates is my monitor - went from a CRT 19" Dell (1280x1024 res) to a HP LCD 22" (1680x1050 res), and my video card - ATI HD 4850 to ATI HD 4890. Obviously there have been a few updated video drivers between now and then.

However, I don't see where those would keep me from running the game??? This is the retail 5-CD's disk game, i.e I bought the game when it was first released.

Any ideals???

Thanks

Hi sygnus21,

are you running FarCry at 1280*1024 or at a higher resolution? I've had similar issue with older games that I've tried to run at higher resolutions funny ones including American McGee's Alice in that in several areas where texture are made up of linked textures they are stretched so much you can see very broad borders between the frames I'm not suspecting this in your case as I've played FarCry recent at 1920*1080 with everything set to the max and it looks beautiful so it does support higher resolutions + systems etc.

Have you had a look at the log file at all, you could try downloading the 2 dll files I mentioned earlier for BugBuster most dll download sites should have them just give them a quick av scan as per usual and place them in the main directory of FarCry the 2 files are msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll.

The two files are part of the Microsoft C Runtime and for some reason don't get installed / are no longer apart of the installation for vista. they used to be included in the installation of xp so I don't know if its been dropped in favour of .net etc. Either way FarCry seems to depend on them so you could give them a shot.

OK, here's the deal now...

I installed Farcry without any patches and was able to run the game without any graphical glitches. However...everytime I start the game the auto configuration tool starts up and I have reset things like, res, game settings, music settings, as these settings are not retained in the game. Manually setting them in the game doesn't work either because I have to "restart the game for settings to take place" and once I do that, again, the auto configuration tool starts, but setting are not kept.

So with that problem, I patch the game with the AMD 64 patch and that's when the graphical errors began. Also with the patch installed, and giving the configuration tool "Admin" rights, the game will hold it's settings, i.e I can set the game to 1680x105 but the screen resolution doesn't change! No matter what resolution I choose the game appears to be stuck at a default resolution of 1024x768.

So three problems - the never ending "Auto Configuration" startup everytime I start the game, settings not sticking, and graphical errors.

So...any suggestions on getting these problems fixed? And what's the best way to patch the game? i.e, should I patch first, then install the AMD 64 patch and contents, or should I just install the AMD 64 patch, leaving the other "official patches out?

Thanks

To be honest mine laptop ran fin without the 64 bit patch installed so I'd start without that first apply the normal patches and start FarCry and then change your gfx settings and close FarCry. Hopefully you should have an update cfg file so just find that file and set it to read-only that way if FarCry tries to modify the file it shouldn't be able to and thus you should theoretically keep your change resolution et al.

Let me know how you get on I've just got steam downloading FarCry now so I can check a few things out for you if need be.

You apply the 1.4 patch,

Patches and Fixes: Far Cry v1.4 Patch Full Install - Demo Movie Patch Download Section - GamersHell.com

before installing the 64 bit patch? As far as I know the 64 bit patch won't work properly if the game isn't patched first (one nice thing with the 1.4 patch is that it is all inclusive of all the previous patches, before that you had to install them all in order (1.1 up to 1.32)).

Another thing to check is, are you turning and AA or AF on? If so is it in the CCC or in-game? If it is both, turn it off in one of them as having those set both in CCC and in-game is known to cause weird things to happen in a lot of games (if you have Far Cry 2, try it with AA enabled in both CCC and in-game and enjoy the massive graphical corruption).

P.S. One more thing about the original Far Cry that most don't know about is that if you install it to a different partition/drive, if you ever re-install Windows for whatever reason you don't have to re-install the game (same applies to quite a few games); just make a new shortcut to the exe and the game will run. I have been playing the same install of Far Cry for at least the lat 3 years and several different OS installs (going back to XP). Doesn't help with the problem, just one of those little things.

Normally I would have patched the game first, then installed the AMD 64 patch, but doing that in the past didn't fix my current problem, so I figured try something different.

I leave AA and AF set to "use application setting" in the Catalyst Control Center for my video card. In fact I never use CCC to force any in-game settings for any games I play. As for the AA settings in Farcry, I've left them off or at the lowest settings.

I always install my games to a different hard drive, in fact I have a hard drive specifically dedicated to games. However I've found at times some game need to have registry strings in order to work properly.

So if you reinstall the OS, even though the game is installed on another drive, you've removed the registry strings and thus will have to reinstall the game to get those reg strings back.

However I do believe you are correct about Farcry, though it's too late for that now for me since I've installed and reinstalled the game about a dozen times. :(

What I did do now is go through the registry and remove anything "farcry"; from there I'll reinstall the game and see what happens. Also note that prior to going through the registry, I could install the game and run in without installing the product key, which tells me something was still registered in the system even the game was removed quite a few times

Hopefully I'll be required to install the activation key when I reinstall the game this time...which in turn says those old registry keys are gone...and the game will finally work...

Fingers X'd

@argowen

Thanks, I'll keep your offer in mind. Also FYI, i tried registering my game with steam by inputing the activation key code, but my code layout is a different format from what steam requires, so no go.

In case you're not familiar with what I'm saying...if you have a game that stem has, you can activate it with steam and get the downloaded/steam version...if you have a valid activation code, and if it follows Steams' format! I did this with Prey, and thought about doing it with Bioshock, but I heard the Steam version of Bioshock was buggy at best.

I did the very same with my copy of Prey didn't with Bioshock though I didn't think about it cos I just installed it however several games will initiate steam from the install (not just valves creations lol), I install F.E.A.R 2 Project Origin the other night and that activated to my steam account but as you mention loads of games won't activate with steam which is a shame really as I do like steam.

Just an update...

I reinstalled my OS, which I needed to do anyway since I had other nagging issues. Anyway, I got Farcry installed and working, However I couldn't get the game to run on anything but the AMD 64 patch. Weird, but it runs and looks great, so I'll leave it as is.

Later

Steam hasfinished downloading farcry as mentioned above; installed without nay hitches and played the game very smooth running at 1920*1080 with all effects at very high and the maximum 4 levels of antialiasing also. mind you with details so high its not just gonna look like far cry 2 but still looks pretty and plays real well.
