Hello Billybellfoot,

Thank you for replying. Couple of things that can be tried which might help us in fixing the issue.

1. Uninstall and re-install VLC media player. Uninstall the program from Programs and Features - Remove Uninstall Entry. Once uninstalled, re-install VLC Media Player and check the functionality.

2. Try playing the same videos on a different media player like Windows media player and check if you get the same error message or the pop up.

Please write back, would be glad to assist you further.

Personally I don't recommend getting any dlls from any source other than the program's creator because the source might have maliciously altered the file. Also the problem might not be with that file but with a dll that is referencing that file. In this case I think that the file is associated with either divX or Xvid. If you have either installed I would try updating the application with a fresh download from their respective website. I hate to sound callous but I strongly disagree with Allan's recomendation.

Hi Billybellfoot,

Try performing a System Restore

**Note: By performing a system restore there would not be any data loss but any recent software or program installed would be lost.

Please try the step and check the functionality.

My Computer

Since you had a codec pack installed it could be looking for it when you play videos as some do require them. If you read the specs it lists both divx and xvid. http://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com/

If you play a video that is expecting one then you will probably get that error. Some videos might not even play without the codec. I don't know enough about them enough to know why they are needed but if it where me I would put it back.

but i didnt use them before and video worked fine i was trying to fix an audio issue that was the reason for installing codec pack. so when i realised the audio problem was a different solution i removed the codec pack.. is it that its not been deleted uninstalled properly?

thanks again for your help

Again, just because you didn't use it doesn't mean that the video doesn't use it. More than likely only video editors will actually do anything with the software but you could be playing videos that are trying to use it. My recommendation is to put it back.
