Error when trying to delete Reg key

Hi I am new to this forum and to Windows Vista.

My Microsoft Outlook 2002 will not retain the passwords. According to Microsoft I have to delete the key under Protected Storage System Providor. The key name is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-2736268696-1854354215-3883615731-1000

When I select Delete on the Edit menu I am sked if I am sure, I click on OK and then a message appears that there was an error deleting the key and it is unable to delete it.

Any one have any answers?

Hi frieslander,

Welcome to Vista x64 Forums.

You will most likely need to take ownership of the registry key S-1-5-21-2736268696-1854354215-3883615731-1000 first before you wil be able to delete it. You can see how to do this in Method One, Option Two (step 3) in this tutorial.

Hi Brink:

I read your message but when I tried your tutorial I was trying to get permissions of the folder contents. I them tried to get permissions of the sub key. When I clicked on the permissions of the sub key the only name on the list was SYSTEM with Full Control. I managed to add my Administrators name to the list somehow??? and finally got things going.

However when I tried the Outlook program again it still would not save my passwords. In Windows XP I had a similar problem years ago and the registry change solved it.

When I went back into the registry my Administor name was gone again and I had to reset the permissions for the sub key all over.

I have Outlook 2002, any idea why my passwords wont save?

Only Outlook, or Office, 2003 or newer is completely compatible with Vista. This may be the cause of your problem with Outlook.

Yes i found that out shortly after posting the question. I should have used the search forum first. Thanks for your reply. I now have to search the forum as too why my IE 7 is slow as mollases at the north pole.

It could be a installed IE7 add-on that is causing the slow down. Usually a added toolbar. You can test this by running IE7 without add-ons in Step One of the tutorial below to see how it runs then. If it runs fine, then it will show you how to find the bad add-on to remove or disable it.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

I removed my Yahoo toolbar but no difference. I did not have any of the sub keys shown in your example, just 3 sets of numbers in brackets.

Even just clicking on any of the buttons such as my favoritezs or edit takes at least a slow cound to 5 (and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5) crazy.

Just to let you know what I have:

A brand new Accer laptop ASPIRE 7520-5839 with an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual-core TK-57 (1.9ghz. 2 x 256 KB L2 Cache)
2GB DDR2 RAM
160 GB HD
751 MB NVIDIA GeForce 7000M Turbo Cache
17" wide screen

Everything worked fine at first, I am going to uninstall my Canon Scanner software as I think it worked better before but not sure.

Ok I deleted my Canon Scanner Tool Box and the Omni Page reader but left my twain software in place. Now my EI 7 is back to normal. Wierd. Now to find out which one caused the trouble. But how could they affect my IE?

OK I re-installed my Canoscan Toolbox, everything still ok. So the problem was the Scansoft OmniPage SE on the original installation CD. The Scan Gear driver and the Toolbox were updates for Vista from the Canon site.

Glad I got it figured out. Also glad I have another laptop with Windows XP installed to search the net for problems as I go along.

One other question: I have a chance to get an used copy of Office 2007 that has been installed once, then then it was removed from the PC and the PC sold and replaced with an Apple pc. There is one installation left, how could I get another installation if I needed. Advertised sets state 2 installations, does that mean it can be put on 2 pc's?

You might check to see if one them added a add-on in IE7 when you install them as a test. If so, you can just disable it.

I believe it means that it can be installed on up to two computers at once with that license and not just two installations and it's dead.

That is what I thought too, but since the other party had it installed and then removed it, it would still be registered at MS as being installed on one PC. How would I get around that in this case?

You should be able to install it without any problems. If you do, it should present you with a option to get it activated in another method.
