Error Code: 501

I purchased a new Gateway laptop the other night. I tried using the Gateway Backup Recovery program to burn backup disks to return the unit to the factory installed software if need be. The problem is, that it fails burning the DVD at the very end each time, and gives and error code: 501. I have searched high and low and cannot find anything about this error, pertaining to burning DVD's. Anyone have any idea what I am looking at or what I need to do? Thanks in advance.

Try a new dvd-R disk (Or a new dvd-RW disk)

Some backup recovery programs will only use a dvd-r, while others like rewritables. Sometimes formating corrupts the disk, and the burn will fail for these reasons.
Here is a free Drive backup program Also:http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/download.html

(Error: 501 is most likely an Internal Gateway/eMachine burn failure code)

I'm having the same problem. I read the manual, and I told me to make a standard back up disc which would contain the settings and programs which were on y laptop when bought. So got soms DVD-R because the manual adviced not to use DVD-RW but now I get the 501 error. Is it possible that I've bought wrong DVDs which can only be used for data files or are the're no different types of dvds???

thx

error:501 is just a burn error possibly as a result of unsupported/conflict issue.
I use Memorex/Phillps DVD+R/DVD+RW I never have issues with burning. Most Optical drives nowadays support DVD+R formats.

Re-install the Optical drive, try a different dvd-r disk, or a different brand, and use a microfibre clothe to gently clean the optical laser lense free of dust.

You might also want to consider burning the Disc with Vista using a "mastered" disc format, instead of using a third party burning app. Do not burn the backup/restore/app disk in the default "Live file format".

To uninstall drive:
go to device manager (type Device in start search), click "dvd/vd rom drives", right click the optical drive, and select "uninstall", then restart Computer, Windows will re-install the device [SATA drives may require manual reinstall of drivers]
