error code 08x80070002

When I try to backup my system to my external drive (Toshiba Canvio 1 terabyte) I get a message saying, "The system cannot find the file specified" with an error code of 08x80070002. I have tried Microsoft Quick clean and Advanced System Care to get rid of any bugs, but I still get it. I'm getting totally frustrated. Anyone know how I can get this done? My system runs fine so I would even be willing to force the backup to ignore the errors.

Thanks

Richard,

I ran the check disk and it did take several hours. It blinked out. How do I know if it was clean? Also, What does Crystal do? BTW: My backup still gets the same message. Thanks for trying but it doesn't look like this was the answer. Should I try Crystal?

My Computer

Crystal is a quickie test. It will tell you if you drive looks ok. Just use it and post the results here. We will go from there.

Hey Richard,

I got all good when I ran it. When I downloaded it, I had two choices. Earlier one came out with problems (450) but this time it came out good but it seemed to be in a whole different format.

I tried my backup and got the same problem. Should I unstall Crystal and try it again?

Don

Richard,

Here are the exact results from Crystal. All of the others were even at Current and Worst and the threshold was 0. I assume that means they were above threshold and the threshold did not allow any above.:

Attribute Name Current Worst Threshold Value

Recalibration retries 100 100 51 000000000000
Spin up time 158 157 21 000000000EE7
Reallocated Sectors Count 200 200 140 000000000000
Seek Error Rate 200 200 140 000000000000
Spin Retry Count 100 100 51 000000000000
Recalibration Retries 100 100 51 000000000000
Write Error Rate 100 253 51 000000000000

I'm really appreciating your help with this. I'm pretty lost.
Thanks

Don

What was the final analysis. Did it say Good, Caution, etc?
That would be the final criteria.

OK Don,
It seems that the problem is not the hard drive, which is good. It would cost money to replace the hard drive. Seems to be a software problem.
Lets try to back up with Macrium. It is what I use and it has saved me at least once. It is used by most of the members in the know, here, not because of problems but because it is awesome and it is free.
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download
It is much more dependable than the back up which is part of Vista and much faster.

Hey Richard,

It looks like it finished. I have an appointment to go to so I need to look at it later. It created an image copy and the Toshiba has data. It completed successfully. My PC knowledge is limited, but I look at drive G: and it looks okay. It's saying you have not yet created rescue media, do you want to create rescue media now. Should I go ahead with that?

If I could find out who and where you are, lunch is on me!!!

Thanks for all of your help. You really saved the day.

Your appreciation is more than enough for my efforts. We are all volunteers with two things in common, our love of computers and our desire to help others.
To continue with your quesiton. Yes, you must make the rescue media. After it is made, boot from the CD. Make sure that it works properly. Dont worry, you will not have to use the back up, just make sure that you can.
You have to know how to boot from a CD (just ask if you dont know) and then the CD will take you to all the back up images that you have saved. You pick the one that you want. In this case, do not pick, because you do not really want to restore, now.

I ran a clone instead. When I tried to pop in a CD for the image, it wouldn't accept it. I did a clone directly to my Toshiba. Shouldn't that be sufficient?

I have actually used Macrium, and it saved me. I, and most others here, use the image. I would go that way. If it does not work, it points to a hard drive problem.

I've used the clone two times and it said it finished successfully. I'll give the image another try. I'm going to read the help for the image to see what I'm doing wrong. It seems I just don't have a thorough understanding of the image.
