DVDs not playing

Hey.

I recently upgraded to Vista 32bit service pack 2. I held off because of a problem I was having with service pack 1 (as I am about to explain), but I thought service pack 2 may have fixed the problem. However, it hasn't.

When I try to play a DVD through Windows Media Center it is just all fuzzy and static. You can see the picture moving, but it's so fuzzy and pixelated that it's impossible to actually make anything out. When I play through Media Player, the picture is just black. The sound is working fine in both programs.

I downloaded a program called VLC media player, and that plays the DVDs just fine, so does this mean that it is a problem with codecs? I'm not too sure, hence why I'm asking here on how to fix the problem. Obviously I could just keep using this new VLC player, but I prefer using Media Center.

Install the K-Lite Codec Pack PLUS the K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit (you need both) and all your problems will be solved (hopefully).

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded the Mega from here, and installed that. The 64bit wouldn't install because I have a 32bit system..? Sadly the DVD still doesn't play correctly.

Wow. It really did sound like a codec issue, one that I've personally experienced. Okay, the answer is (hopefully) firmware on your DVD drive. What drive and model do you have?

This is on a Dell PC, correct? Go to support.dell.com and find the latest firmware for your drive.

The only drivers that seem to be coming up for my service tag are a driver and firmware relating to CA200 HH 13-1 Card Reader.

You know VLC plays music too ....

I believe if you purchase DVD playback software such as CyberLink PowerDVD or WinDVD for example the appropriate codecs will be installed to the system that will allow playback through Windows Media Player. I suspect there are free alternatives available out there or one that someone else on here can recommend to you

Hopefully, I don't fancy paying just to get my DVD to run like it used to!

Search google for AVS DVD Player, that's freeware (has not ads or pop-ups etc).
Never used it myself unless someone can recommend something better.

i use vista codec pack from shark. i used to have a codec problem, and people on this forum recommended the codecs.

Try these codecs, they are scanned and clean.
They will work with everything i play.

I recommend trying the Satsuki Decoder pack (here). It comes with a copy of MPC, a modified Media Player Classic that I am a huge fan of, and the codecs it comes have been able to play just about everything I've been able to throw at it, DVD's included.
