DVD RW ejects discs

Every time I inset a disc it is rejected as soon as i double click the icon. I have deleted the upper and lower filters on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. My discs are not read and they eject when I double click the icon. But it clearly doesn't read it and I also uninstalled some DVD writing programs, unless their still there? Any help would be appreciated.

Strange, I had the same prob a month ago.

I was assisted by HP customer service, ended up with three reps. The first one told me to just return the notebook, the second insisted to re-install factory setting and the last one asked if I had just unstalled or installed any softwares or programs prior to prob...and I answered no. But she was relentless, remotely she found out I had three updates automatically installed the day before onset of optical drive prob. She deleted one at a time. The third one was the culprit. I was fine after the deletion.

I have since, changed to semi-automatic option, "Check for update but let me choose whether to download or install them".

Three days ago, my PC started acting up. Some icons disappeared from taskbar and Quick launch. I found two intruders, VONGO and Spybot 2009. I was fine after difficult deletions but one icon did not self restore (I was helped by Vista Forum in icon restoration). Today, after reading your thread which reminded me of updates, I discovered that the intruder (dunno which one) had changed my update setting back to the rcommended full Automatic which installed 10 updates for Office 2007 program which I had unstalled a month ago, together with the other trials. Dunno if any of those updates was responsible for the lost icon. But since thay were all irrelevant, I deleted all and reset update setting.

Is it possible your prob might be from unstalling some DVD programs? Or (gulp!) some automatic updates?

Very interesting. How does one uninstall a windows update? And if I do use restore points that Vista has created will I lose installed programs?

P.S. I'm from Queens myself.

Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features > View installed updates > (by default, they are already listed chronologically. If not click view by dates)...click update to highlight then click "delete".

To re-install deleted updates: Start > All Programs > Windows Updates > (Here, you review available updates and choose (check)the ones you want installed or re-installed. Unchosen updates should have un-checked box before hitting "install". Afterwards, if they are repeatedly being asked to be installed (when your setting is not recommended Automatic), right click them and click "hide".

System Restore is extremely safe. If one restoration does not solve prob, you can always un-restore and choose another (earlier date) restore point.

Caveat: This feature takes LOTS of space (in hundreds of MB's). Periodically and often, delete all previous restore points except the latest but only when PC is running along smoothly.

You know what? My gut feeling is you unstalled some programs required by your CD/DVD system. Why don't you re-install deleted DVD programs (Go to Recovery Manager). You can always re-unstall them again.

>Start > type r on "start search", click Recovery Manager and make sure you stick to "program recovery" option. Follow instructions. Click the program you want re-installed. Some of them might already need updates by now... but that's another bridge to cross later on.

Also, depending on what you want to burn, some discs might be the wrong disc to use(unsupported). The fact that they are being rejected means they are being acknowledged, except your picky OS is saying "Not my type...get lost!" Try CD-R or DVD-R.

I suspect you also should stay away from "regedit". The registry is sacred. You must be well credentialed before stepping on such hallowed ground.

Hello Han Solo,

If you use a restore point, you will have to reinstall any programs that you installed since then as the restore will reset the registry. Your personal files are safe.
