Hi,

I would very much appreciate some help. I've been working for a week applying fixes to no avail. I have an HP compaq notebook and the DVD drive (TSST TS-L632H) disappears for no apparent reason. I did a system recover, which reinstalled original factory software and settings. The drive reappeared right after system recovery, but now it randomly appears and disappears. Microsoft Fix It does not fix it. There are no upper or lower filters in registry. Device Manager does not show it. I have Vista home premium. Sometimes I boot up, and there it is. However, later it disappears.

Once I opened My Computer after restarting. I watched as the drive was present, and then as the green loading bar was moving to completion across the top of My Computer, I saw the drive disappear. I have tried taking out the drive and putting it back in, doesn't help. If I do system restore to a time when the drive was present, after the restore it still isn't present. I am wondering if Windows DVD Maker is causing some conflict. I can't find any other Dvd burning software, besides that. I can't uninstall DVD Maker because it is part of OS. I also heard there might be some conflict with the AHCI driver. Any ideas?? Please help!

God bless you,
J.

Hi WalkerThrough, I think I know what has happened, your optical drive may not have been allocated a letter, go to the start menu and type in "computer management" and hit enter, this will bring up a window with loads of sub menus, find disk management and click it, now see if your drive appears there, if it does then right click and click on "change drive letter and paths" now click add and choose a drive letter from the drop down menu that isn't being used, click ok and then exit the management, restart your computer and your drive should be back permanently, if not then you may have a faulty optical drive or cable.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Actually, when the DVD drive disappeared, it also disappeared from disk management. Right now, it has been working and showing in device manager most of the time I'm using the computer. However, sometimes it disappears when I wake up from sleep. Could it be a faulty DVD drive? I thought that was not the problem because when I do a system recovery back to original shipping conditions, it always reappears then on first boot up. When it disappeared, I updated to Service Pack 2 for Windows, and it reappeared. Any idea how to keep it from disappearing when the pc wakes up from sleep?? Please help. Thanks.

God bless you,
Walker
