DVD/CD rom error code 39

Help! I have a HP Pavilion dv6815nr, running Vista, not sure is it's 32 or 64 bit, service pack 1.
The device manager shows this to have a conflict:
DVD/CD ROM: HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-T20L ATA Device
Device Status: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Error code 39.

I tried to update to the driver and Windows determined that the driver software for the device is up to date. I searched the HP Support site and here I am...

I can follow detailed instructions if anyone has any ideas on how to get this working again. I just used the drive 2 days ago. Thanks to any and all sugestions.

Hi partsgirl95

Welcome to the forums.

What happens if you go to device manager and right click on the cd/dvd and choose uninstall. Then restart the PC and let windows reinstall it. Hopefully that will work.

You mentioned trying to 'update' the drivers - can you specify which drivers are being used? If they are not Microsoft drivers, then have you checked the HP website to see if new drivers were recently released? The HP updater may have recently installed the new drivers....

Ok, here's the scoop...When I noticed that there was a conflict with the dvd/cd rom, I clicked on the properties. There was an option to "update driver". I tried that in hopes it would correct the issue. So, can I specify which drivers I'm trying to update? No, just grasping for straws. Yes, I did try the HP site. Did not have any luck there either. There was an update alert that I applied yesterday or the day before. This came from the HP site (I hope).

Any other sugestions? I'll try anything. I brought the pc back to the store of purchase as it is still under warranty, but they tell me there is a 4 day turn around. Not a good time for me to be without a pc just because the dvd/cd rom dosent cooperate. (darn thing!) I appreciate your time and assistance.

Hi,

Yes , the registry thing is the same on the MS thread - it explains how to remove the Lower and Upper filters.

Give it a try - at least look and see if they're in you registry.

Hope it helps
