Drivers not showing, nither updating

Hello all, i have my gfs laptop, it use to work normal but one day she came to play sims on the laptop and the game wouldnt start, i took a look at it and saw that the sc drive was not showing in the "computer" section, so i tryed to update but it was up to date, i poped a cd in the drive and u can hear the cd spin but nothing loads on the screen or any thing. I tryed to do a system restore and there was no date set at all for a restore point, im an XP user so i dont know much about vista. I looked around more on the setting and saw that she didnt have SP1 for the laptop, i tryed to down load it and it goes to the screen saying downloading 1 out of 3 and it hits like 5% and then says couldnt install, will retry upon start up, it did that and still the same msg poped up, i tryed to put a usb hard drive to save all the pics she has on the pc and her personal stuff that she doesnt want to delete and the laptop did not detect the usb stick, or a seprate usb drive that i have , i took it in to futureshop and the guy took a look at it and removed the cd drive and put it back it and it wouldnt work. I dug around some more and tryed to start it up in safe mode and fix it from there but then i get a box saying put your password and user name the wired part is that my gf never set a user name or a password, how can i fix this problem and get the drive to show in my compter section? thanks

with your issue this is a longshot but give it a go

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

sorry about paragraphs, but thats how i write lol. Ok i was just digging some more and found out that the drivers are locked. I went to unlock them but when i hit apply it asks me for a password, witch i dont have, it gives me an option about a hint but when i press on it the hint window is empty i dont know how to pass that... and the laptop was not upgraded to vista it came with vista. Is there a way i can get the password somehow from acer or somthing?

drivers for what? you dont need drivers for your dvd drive mate , USB drivers are located on your motherboard driver set , but i doubt thats your issue

is it the UAC (user account control) thats kicking in and asking for a password? Or are the drivers zipped? (compressed) and you need a password to un compress them?

(your background will grey out and the UAC window pops up if its user account control)

have you tried my suggestion , the reg edit link?

The cd rom driver is locked and i need a password tounlock it and i dont know the password nore does my girlfriend, she got the laptop a a Birthday gift from her mom and dad, that got the laptop from her uncle. If i connect a usb drive or my phone threw a usb i get a msg saying the usb is locked by elock or something like that. I'll have to talk to my gf and get her to ask her uncle what the password might be and ur suggestion in the first post i dont think it will help since i didnt upgrade to vista, the laptop is vista to start with, ill get back to ya in a few days so i can see if i can get a password or somthing thanks for the help :D

ill try again............ you dont need a driver for your cd rom

USB ..................... Digital Signature & Electronic Signature Software Solutions - E-Lock Im assuming her uncle will have the password , then disable it.........

she has asked her uncle and he never did set a password for the elock thingy im out of options is there a way i can get the password reset? maybe call acer and ask?

its worth a shot mate , maybe it came installed on the laptop
