Driver causing device to dc?

Hello Vista Forums!

I hope you guys can help me out on this one, as I wasn't able to fix it myself yet.

I'm on Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 and tried to install my USB wifi adapter. It's an Atheros AR5007UG.
When I plug it in (other USB devices work, tried different USB ports) I hear windows' notification sound of a new plug&play device, then the autoplay dialogue comes up,asking if I want to open the folder via the explorer or executing the setup.exe that's on the stick.

Now when I click on the first option (executing the setup.exe) I instantly get the notification sound that indicates that a device has been disconnected. When I click to open the folder or just wait for 1-2 seconds, the device disconnects on its own again.

It doesn't even come up in the device manager, sometimes I don't even get the autoplay dialogue options.

I tried using it on my girlfriend's laptop (which has Vista x86 as OS) and it worked perfectly there. The installation routine goes as this: when I plug in the stick, I get the windows sound, bubble in the info tray comes up, stick turns off again BUT turns on again by itself, being fully installed and ready to use at that point.

So it somehow can't initialize on my system. I tried downloading new drivers from the manufacturer's homepage and placing the files in the archive into my windows/system32/driver folder but to no avail, it still keeps disconnecting from the system on its own.

How can I prevent the stick from disconnecting on its own and applying new drivers for it? I'm on my wit's end and would highly appreciate some help on this.

Thanks in advance :)
