drive won't read DVD's or CD's

Hello everybody, I have a problem, and I am wondering if you can help me.

My D drive is listed in "My Computer". According to my device manager, my drive is working properly and has been updated.

I've uninstalled both Itunes and AnyDVD. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nero. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. And I've tried the regedit steps that are on the Microsoft support site.

So basically what is happening is that when I put media into the drive, it starts trying to spin for about 30 seconds, and then it stops. I get the disc icon next to my cursor while the disc is spinning. It's all kinds of media, including DVD's, Cd's, DVD-r, DVD+r, and blank DVD's and blank CD-r's.

When I go to "my computer", and click on the DVD Drive, the disc tray opens and tells me to insert a disc. When I insert the disc, the drive tries to read it for several seconds, and then stops.

I don't know if this will help, but this problem started this morning when I tried to burn a DVD with a new spindle of discs.

I'm not technically savvy at all. When it comes to computers, I have the skill level of a kindergartener. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
