Do not want to downgrade....

Here is my problem, its not original, but yet still a problem. I just recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv7 with Vista Home x64. I have purchased this laptop for the specs. I am currently a student pursing a degree in game simulation programming. I have been a XP prof user since the programs release. I have heard nothing but problems with Vista, so I was a little bummed that the only option I had was to get Vista as my OS. It has been about 5 days now and I have grown to like Vista and the new features. This is where my problem comes in.

I need to play and access a number of games, single or multilayer. Only problem is that every so often I hit big lag pockets. By lag I mean that I will freeze in place, along with the environment and other players for no more than 2-4 seconds. Then the game plays catchup. This is putting a huge damper on my usual gaming and school.

I have researched online on what is causing the lag. It appears to be a very common problem. I have tried the Vista-Anti-Lag, WLAN, XP drivers, and disabling the WLAN in command prompt. All have not worked for me. As I read further into it, the mentioned above only seem to work for non 64 bit versions.

Is there a update or something I can do to help stop this? I do not want to have to downgrade back to XP.

My Laptop Spec's are as follows...

I am using a Linksys Gateway for my internet and Comcast as my ISP.

I am using Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN

Everything is working fine on my desktop which is using XP prof and is connected wireless.


If there is anything I can do to help this problem before having to down-grade please let me know, or if it is already explained somewhere please let me know.

Ok dude, if your going to pursue the career of game programming then you need to know that all professional programmers don't use Branded PC's. You have to assemble your PC to your needs because this way you will know acknowledge any problems on your system & faster than on a branded pc. It's one of those big advantages dude. Branded PC's are for novices, mainstream products that are sold for random use & not for programmers, computer designers, engineers or even editors.
From my understanding you are experience problems because of missing drivers or maybe your running out of RAM when gaming? 4GB is a minimum while Vista accumulates on idle 1.4GB and even more on full load. Most games out there on the market on a minimum need 1.5GB+. You might be fitting in just barely with the RAM and this causes major lagging & stattering problems. You always need more RAM no matter what & the more you supply it, the faster the computer is. There has been issues posted with HP here somewhere.
Vista is a great OS with more features than XP. One small disadvantage is that it's a young OS but it'll mature sooner or later.

As starting out in this field, and paying for college out of my own pocket, I do not have the pleasure of getting what I need only what I can afford. I bought a hp, uninstalled all the bloatware. Ram is not the issue. All my drivers and firmware is up to date. This is nothing wrong with my laptop or any of my other gear, the problem is with something blocking/ interrupting my connection on a timed interval. Every message board I come onto, people always try to point the finger at the devices and software. I used a program, Web ping. While pinging my ip along with others, there is a rhythm of 60 seconds then packet loss.

So if you are done pointing out the obvious can you give some advise? I don't need opinions, I need advise.

Alright, well then it's an networking issue. I'm not fond on that subject much because I don't game on multiplayer. Your in the wrong forum, concentrate in the Networking section.
I'm no aristocrat either but for the money you've spend on that HP, I would assembly a decent PC.

That would be cool.....If I needed a PC. When I go to class I am really not up for packing up my PC and setting it up in class. I needed a laptop so I bought one.

I have no trouble browsing the internet or downloading for that matter. Now if there is a Game Networking section, then I will go to there, but as far as I'm concerned, my issue is within Vista and only when I game.

Once again if your not going to be of any assistance then stop replying and wasting my time.
