DNS Server problem

Ok so I have a what I presume to be a networking problem.

IN the first 5 minutes of starting up my computer, I have access to the internet via internet browsers like Google

Chrome and Mozilla. However, after those 5 minutes, whenever I click a new page, it takes a long time to load and

eventually it stops loading.

Mozilla tells me this:

The connection was reset


The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.


* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

while Google Chrome tells me this:

address.

I am fairly certain though that I am still connected to the internet because my torrents are

running/downloading/uploading/seeding and my Windows Live Messenger is still running. However I am unable to access

website pages.

The blue network icon at the bottom right hand corner of my computer tells me I am currently connected to my

wireless network and Access: Local and Internet.
When I click on diagnose problem, Windows Network Diagnostics tell me:

Cannot communicate with DNS server (218.186.1.58)

Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response.

Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically...

So what indeed is/are the problem(s)? I have tried "ipconfig/dnsflush", "ipconfig/registerdns", "netsh winsock reset catalog" and "netsh int ip reset reset.log" but apparently they do not work. The only way around it is to switch off then on my modem and router only to have them fail on me again after 5 minutes.

Have you tried using alternative DNS servers, such as OpenDNS (208.67.222.220 or 208.67.220.222) ?

Dwarf: Where or how do I input those alternate DNS servers? In TCP/IPv4 or TCP/IPv6? In my router settings or where? I have tried several places using trial and error but they do not work.

My thoughts are around malware, the DNS is not exactly local to you & therefore could be a
re-direct. If this is your choice of a preferred DNS then fine. Otherwise I would recommend a scan: -

You're using a Singaporean proxy, proxy.xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.maxonline.com.sg, so it would be perfectly normal for your DNS server to be Singapore-based. Unless explicitly set in the router settings, your DNS server will be allocated by your ISP (or proxy server, should you use one).

I highly doubt that the problem is malware-based because indeed that DNS is my preferred choice. And like Dwarf said it is perfectly normal.

Ok if I use either Google's DNS or OpenDNS servers, Windows Network Diagnostics tell me: Cannot communicate with DNS server (The DNS address I used)

However, after some meddling with the router settings, something is different now. If I set my TCP/IPv4 back to "Obtain DNS server address Automatically", Windows Network Diagnostics tell me: Cannot communicate with Primary DNS server.

Is this indication a good thing or what?

Hi,

Do you now have a mixed set-up? ie Windows manually set & router on auto.

Set both to auto & try again. Once that is working reset your manual setting to what you like to have in the router & leave the PC on auto.

Ok thanks guys for all the suggestions but the problem seems to be fixed. After some more meddling with the router settings, during which it went haywire, I decided to reset everything (using the disc the router came with) and it fixed the problem, for now I guess. I will post again if I run into future problems though. In any case, thanks for all the wonderful suggestions.
