DNS Question

OK im learning new things about DNS all the time. when I type this

mstsc /v: pc12

Is this what happens.

Does my pc send a request to our dns server on our local network trying to find a hostname called pc12. If the hostname pc12 is found in DNS it then finds the associated IP address.

Once the IP address has been found it then converts the IP into the pc12's MAC address using ARP which then allows me to connect to pc12 using Remote Desktop

Thanks in advance

Hi ibit-matt,

Almost :D, the DNS is a TCP/IP function so returns the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address rather than the MAC address - It also checks its local hosts file first, then the local DNS server and so - on until it finds an entry ( or returns an error when you spell it wrong :) )

A good eplanion is here if you want to better understand dns ...

Thanks for the reply.

In this TCP/IP book im reading it said that in the TCP/IP stack the network access layer actually uses the mac address to connect to the other pc network adaptor.

So ARP would have to be used to convert the IP to the Mac Address to make the connection to the destination pc

Like I said im still learning. :-)

What barman said.

It might also be useful to know the sequence of hostname resolution which is normally:

1. Check if the name is its own
2. Check local hosts file
3. Query DNS
4. NETBIOS
