Disk Error most of the time!!!

Hi,

This is my first post here and my use of vista.

My problem is chkdsk runs almost every time I boot my pc. and when I check in the event viewer I receive this error "The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume VISTA_SP1." I run a couple of chkdsk and still receive this error.

I already reinstalled vista twice already and still have the same problem.

The only software I installed here is firefox 3, Eset Nod32 3 and tuneup utilities. Does any of this software causes my HD to corrupt?

Thanks in advance and I really want this working.

I would run the disk utilities from the manufacturer on the drive. Sounds like you have a bad drive. I would replace the drive with a new drive. Install the OS and patch it. Then, download the disk utilities and test the drive. If its under warrenty, RMA it.

Hi, vaikz, and welcome to the forums.

As Michael wrote, you'll want to figure out who makes your Hard Drive and then go to their website and grab a diagnostics program to check it. A couple of key points:

  • You need to know who makes the HD, not the PC - If you need help figuring out who makes the HD, try using SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala to get the answer.
  • You need to visit that manufacturer's website, and look for tools.
  • Knowing what your machine is would help us out tremendously in the future so we don't have to continually ask you questions in order to help you out.

Now, with regards to corrupted HDs: a few things to think about.

Your hard drive is a mechanical device, and just as with any other mechanical device, it can have problems, or it can be corrupted by external processes. Some problems that can cause drive corruption:

  • Power spikes / outages while in use
  • Blunt force shock, especially while in use
  • Software corruption

Not that the first two deal with physical errors on the drive whereas the last is a software issue only.

Now, software does not *usually* cause a hardware (physical) error on the drive - and the HD diagnostics mentioned above will find out if the hardware is bad or not.

Software can cause software corruption - but power outages / spikes, Manually forced restarts and many other things can also cause software corruption.

We simply cannot say one way or the other *for sure* until you run the diagnostics.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply. The fact is I was able to figure out what causes the disk to error.

First thing fist, there's no problem with the disk. Tested it with the utilities from seagate and I didn't receive any error. Second I remember that the last time I did a format of partition with DD, the sector level was set to 4. So I reformatted it again using the 8, and for now it work for a day now.

Again thanks for the reply.
