Disk Drive - gone.

This is the second time this has happened, only the first time it reappeared after i rebooted.
Basically, i can't recall the day it 'disappeared' but it was over 4/5 days ago i think.
I've rebooted a number of times, tried the DVD drive tutorial thing from windows, and ran a few scans and still nothing.
However, my device manager tells me that its working correctly. Great.
I dont think i've done anything differently, i first noticed it was acting up when i converted and burnt a dvd onto a disk and the drive wouldnt open, so i had to reboot, it opened and then there was nothing on the disk, and from then on its gone :sarc:

I've used the converter before with no problems so i know its not that,
but i need my disk drive!

Does anyone know whats going on?
Im on a Medion Laptop - MIM 2310 Notebook, and Running Windows Vista Basic, with Intel Celeron inside (whatever the hell that is  )

The number for the disk drive on the device manager is:
WDC WD1200BEVS-22UST0 ATA Device

Thanks in advance!

*Please Note*
While i do have two GCSE's in ICT, try not to assume i know what everythings called!
I am familiar with almost everything on my laptop, i just dont know all the technical jargon, :)

Hello Akarithor,
Try going to the Device Manager and un-install the drive, then reboot, this will reinstall the driver.
This does not always fix it but its a good place to start, at least you know the drivers are OK.

Also, open a command prompt as administrator and type in sfc/scannow press enter and let it scan, if errors are found you may need to do this more than once.

Check this site too, there are a lot more fixes there, seems to be more than one cause for this error.

cd/dvd drive not detected by windows

Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Hiiiii.
Thanks for that, but I did all those things and none of it worked :/
I dunno, i'm beginning to think a cable is loose or something.
But when I put a disk in, it makes all the right noises and sounds, so it does know it has a disk in it! I just dont think its connected properly.
Argh :(

You may have to open it up and check that the data cable is in tight.

[edit]
took your advice after all!
unscrewed everything and had a look, didnt touch ANYTHING as it happens, just looked.
However when i switched it back on, the disk drive was there, so im convinced something is loose! or was loose, because there was an out of place screw hole which i fixed, ironically enough just above the disk drive.

thanks for all the help though :)

Your very welcome, glad you got it fixed.
When you have five minutes, take a look at the tutorial section, there are a lot of good tips in there too.
