Disable HD Audio?

Hello. I recently bought a new PC with Windows Vista on. It supports HD audio, and came with Realtek HD Audio Drivers. I do however only have 2 "normal" speakers -- no surround equipment or anything like that at all. And I think the audio sounds weird now, compared with my old PC, which did not have this "HD Audio" thing.

Is there any way to go back to plain old audio? Maybe it can be done in the Realtek HD Audio confguration in the Control Panel?

You can also set the audio you want in the BIOS.

In Vista launch the Realtek HD Audio Manger, it should be in your system tray, its an orange icon of a speaker. Ensure your speaker configuration is set to stereo, and under Environment turn it off.

Thank you. It is set to "2.1", and there are no enviroment effects turned on. But still, the audio sounds all weird. I tried the same speakers on my old PC now, just to ensure that this is not my ears being weird, but on my old PC, audio sounds much better when using the same speakers. The old PC has those old AC97 drivers.

Not on my PC. I already checked in BIOS -- it only lets me turn audio ON and OFF there. But thank you very much for trying to help.

2.1 is the wrong setting - that means you have 2 speakers and a subwoofer - making it 3 speakers.

You need a basic 2 speaker setting (aka stereo)....

Thank you for helping! I really appreciate that! The Realtek HD Audio Manager I have now does not allow me to choose basic stereo settings -- only 2.1 or higher. That is the problem. There is no option for normal plain stereo there at all.

I will try downloading the new driver from your link! Thank you.

My pleasure- I had some issues as well with the drivers that came with my motherboard - seems it wanted to give me a *lot* of feedback if I increased the volume above 50% - but I finally figured out that removing the drivers and then installing the latest fixed that issue - and it is what I figured was happening to you as well.
