Desktop totally black, icons gone, taskbar visible, can't browse computer in Windows

My laptop screen hang and i got a message saying "the windows is not responding" and there were two options given,1:close the program 2:wait for the program to respond.So,i clicked close the program.But then the screen is still not responding,so i manually shut down my laptop.
when i logged on to my laptop,my desktop is totally black,no icons,i can see the taskbar and start menu,i can browse firefox,but when click to open my document folder or my computer folder,there is just no response,anything in the start menu is unable to be opened. I had tried the method which is to exit the explorer then create a new explorer,but the problem is remained...
can someone help me with this?

If you can use sytem restore from one week before the problem
If you cannot access SystemRestore, try in safe mode

Do i need the cd to do SystemRestore?Because i can't found my cd..

If you can boot either normally or with safe mode you can do SR. Dont need the DVD.
