Need some help...My Desktop icons move to new locations everytime I restart my PC and I can't figure out how to stop it. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Right click on the icon and tell it to stop prearranging their position. Most likely your monitor is self adjusting when you login to windows and because of that, the icons get shuffled around because of the auto arrange function.

Right-click anywhere on your Desktop. On Sort by have everything unchecked.
On View check only, Align to grid, and Show desktop icons(in addition to your icon size choice).

Don't use 'em. They are a pita when you think about it anyway. I have a folder in Documents, inside is 6 subfolders with categories of programs. I changed the folder icons to custom icons so I could tell what's what without a label. Then I dragged them onto RocketDock. The folders are the 6 spanned by the arrow in the screen shot. Now I don't have a single desktop icon to worry about.

Okay. Under "Sort By", nothing is checked. Under "View", Align to grid is checked and Show Desktop Icons is checked. I never had this problem priot to installing the new Internet Explorer 8 on my PC. I like the idea of all those folders but don't know how to. Thanks for the replys so far.

From what I've read, you are not alone re: Desktop problems following
IE8 install. No clear solutions. This number is supposed to be for free help
with IE8 installation issues ( I haven't called it ).

If you are inclined to, you could create a new User Account and see if the problem persists there. If not, migrate to the new account, and delete the old one.

What do you mean by creating a new user account? And yes, the number is for IE8 problems. I spent a couple days on the phone fixing the problem of attachments not opening after installing IE8. Until they fixed it I was using Mozilla and Thunderbird and although a little different, nice to use.

New User Account:

Start orb > Control Panel > Classic View (left pane) > User Accounts >
Manage another account > Create a new account >
Tick Administrator > Create account.

Here you go critter, this is what I have set up, and never any problems;



However, when done, just right-click an empty space on your Desktop again, and this time, just confirm your action with a Refresh. You should find that all of your Icons will give a momentarily "blink".

I am not sure how to make your desktop icons STOP moving around, but there are a couple of applications out there that could help you...The first is called WinTidy, a handy little toy that will save your icon layout and then restore it if need be. This is especially useful if you categorize or group your icons and don't just let them line up by themselves. You can get it here: WinTidy

Another option for you is a simple registry addition. Some people may shy away from this as people don't like fiddling with the registry, but it may be actually simpler than using an application because it makes it a Windows function.
