Desktop Icons

I have about 100 or so desktop icons on my desktop.I have put them in seperate folders on my desktop, because they were everywhere. The thing I want to know is??. Having so many icons on the desktop, will this affect the way vista starts up,as I have noticed that the desktop is slow on opening the icons on start up??,when there were only say 40/50 icons, they opened up really fast. There are NO programs in my start up menu, and NO programs that start with vista. Can someone please advise me as to whether or NOT,I should have so many icons on the desktop,or,only a few? Thanks

You can manage your desktop icons with programs such as
Iconoid - Download
RocketDock - About RocketDock

I use RocketDock, you can customize it and put a lot of icons on it and then make the bar big or small to fit your needs, but if you put an icon on it and delete the original you won't be able to just drag it back onto the desktop from the rocket dock. It will disappear, so you should either keep a copy of all your icons in a folder or be able to access the original program to make another shortcut if you had to. And it wouldn't let me open txt. files if I put them directly on the dock from notepad. Just a suggestion. :D

Thank You Airbot,... All I really wanted to know was if having over 100 icons on the desktop, will slow down the start up on the desktop.. like when I start up vista the folders are vanilla, then as the system continues the folders change into the icons that I have given them??.. Can you help me,or know what to do??.Does Rocket Dock slow down the system at start up?

Yes - your desktop is a folder, as such, and the more 'icons' you have there the longer it takes as those are all scanned. Plus, an icon is just a picture - the actual *file* type that is on the desktop is the important thing. If you have 5 programs that you have extracted to the desktop, then those will be a lot large than a 2KB shortcut, for example, and will slow stat up down that much more drastically.

You really need to see what those files are - are they *all* (and I mean *every last one of them) shortcuts, or are some media files, or are some programs, or are some archives, etc....

Make a new folder on your desktop and call it Deskcuts. Put all your less frequently used icons in that folder to clean up your desktop. You keep the few icons you use very frequently out on the desktop. Next go to the taskbar with your mouse pointer and right click. Choose Toolbars>New Toolbar and then navigate to the Deskcuts folder you just made and select it for the new Toolbar. When you are finished, you will have a new Toolbar on your taskbar called Deskcuts. When you click the double chevron (>>), all your shortcuts you put in that folder will rise like a menu.

Sure you can Riptorn, if you have them in a folder already you can just drag or copy them to your User folder or Documents folder and just keep the few that you want on the desktop.

Yes you can move the folder where ever you want. You must then close the old Toolbar you made and start a new one. Rightclick on it's name in the taskbar and choose "Close Toolbar"

Maybe I should go slower.

1. Make your folder where you want to hold most of the desktop shortcuts you don't use that often. EG: Start>Documents. Note that the address bar shows "your username>Documents. You will need to find this location later.
2. Rename it what you want the Toolbar to be called if necessary.
3. Move all your shortcut icons from the desktop into the folder you just made
4. Rightclick on the Taskbar in a blank area
5. Select Toolbars>>New Toolbar. You should have a window open where you "Select the Folder"
6. Navigate using this window to where the folder is that you moved your shortcuts to. This will be in C:\Users\your username\Documents\your folder name if you used the EG above.
7. Select the folder with the shortcuts in it
8. you should now have a new Toolbar named your folder name on the right hand end of the Taskbar named "your folder name".
