When installing software that says it will place a shortcut icon on the desktop no icon appears and sometimes I can't find the program to create my own icon. Is there any way to overcome this?
Sometimes you will need to right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on Refresh, or press F5, to see the new shortcut.
You can also manually create a shortcut from the program exe file's folder in the C:\Program Files folder. You would just right click on the exe file and click on Send to and Desktop (create shortcut).
Many thanks. Right click and refresh solved one problem. As a newcomer to Windows Vista I have also discovered it is sometimes necessary to download alternative drivers even though the device (and presumably the accompanying software) is supposed to be compatible!
With some programs, if you have to install them by running the installation file as an administrator, then the desktop used to place the shortcut on is NOT yours, but that of the administrator account used during installation. You can always follow Shawn's advice about placing a shortcut for the program on YOUR desktop.

I AM the administrator so this is not a problem. However with Shawn's help and also downloading alternative drivers where necessary I have now managed to install everything correctly with desktop icons. Many thanks for your help - and the quote!
