Solved Desktop Icon problems

Hi,

My desktop icons are not working correctly the applications are working fine but the icons are all the same attached is a jpeg of what it looks like as it is hard to explain the problem.

Hello Southlander, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It looks like you may have used the improper method for XP to remove the shortcut arrow in VIsta. You will just need to restore the shortcut arrow from the link posted by mansrm81 above, then you can remove it with same program if you like.

Hey it seems not to be working correctly i just remembered that when the first error occured it was after i installed CA Security Suite. Anyway you can help me?

Have you tried uninstalling CA security suite and see if that fixes your problem.

Many programs do this and uninstalling them no help.By using Vista Shortcut Overlay Manager disable arrows by icons and enable arrows again.

Have you tried Brinks tutorial on rebuilding the icon cache? What about a system restore?

That's the improper XP method, that can cause the shortcut icons to have a blank icon instead. I would not recommend to use that one in Vista.

Hello Nsbjsn, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if right clicking on the Vista Shortcut Overlay Manager shortcut and clicking on Run as administrator will allow it to work properly afterwards to remove the arrow.

My *.REG file remove phrase IsShortcut only for the moment and restore it back again.I don't think so it cauld cause any problem :eek:

Vista uses this value to track links, if you remove or rename the IsShortCut value lots of programs and features that use links will not work correctly. For example, in Vista the shortcuts in Favorite Links, Media Center, and in the Games Explorer disappear or will not work anymore.

I have doubt about it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"="%SystemRoot%\\Blank.ico,0"

It will work only if you have Blanc.ico file in C:\Windows,but Blank.ico is non-system file -not everybody have this file.Probably this file comes from Vista Shortcut Manager and in my opinion it will work only if you have already this program.But if you don't have and you never had this trik won't work
For example I'm using WinBubble and I have in registry:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"="E:\\Program Files\\Tweakers\\WinBubble\\icons\\noicon.ico"

To make trik universal to everyone I suggest to use shell32.dll <- in this file exist blank icon

That's why the Blank.ico file is included in the ZIP to add to the C:\Windows folder.

It's been tested and Geek approved in 32-bit and 64-bit Vista and Windows 7 with only using what is in the ZIP folder in STEP TWO.

The blank icon in shell.32.dll is for the whole icon I believe instead of just the shortcut arrow overlay on the icon.
