Desktop Error

Hello I am new to the forum and not very computer savvy so please forgive me if the information is vague or confusing.

Yesterday I had worked on my laptop for a while and it was fine but when I went back to it later that night there was no desktop, or rather the appearance of the desktop was changed:
-The taskbar did not look like the normal taskbar.
-The side bar was gone.
-None of the normal shortcuts that I have appeared.

Also I tried using my Microsoft Word but that was not functioning either. I had an error after logging into Vista that said something to the effect that if my desktop was on a network there was an issue with the network or that the file location has been moved. It didn't appear that there was an issue with the network. Not sure how to check a file location.

Not sure if this matters but all of this happened after having installed certain updates early that day.

Does anyone know what has happened here and how I can fix this?

Go to Control Panel > Personalize or you can right-click on the desktop and select Personalize, and then choose the link for "Change Desktop Icons" on the left-hand side.

Now you can chose the icons you want back on the desktop by checking the box next to them.

Click the Apply, and you should see the icon show up on the desktop immediately.
