Desktop background problem

Hi i just read brinks discussion on removing the desktop from the personalize window lol and i was just wondering how to get that back the active desktop feature in regedit is not there for me can anyone help

by the way i am not a total noob lol i am taking a computer support specialist course in college so you don't have to dumb it down for me lol

Hello Alexi, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The download in Method Two (step 1) of that tutorial should restore the reg entry and the Desktop Background option back in Personalize for you.

thanks there brinks but sadly i downloaded the show desktop background and proceeded through the steps and still no luck i installed i restarted but no luck the only thing it gave me was the active desktop reg item

Alexi, by default the Active Desktop key (folder) is not in the registry. It is only added to the registry to add the other NoChangingWallpaper DWORD value in it to remove the Desktop Background option.

When you run the REG file to add the Desktop Background option back, it only deletes the NoChangingWallpaper DWORD value and not the now empty Active Desktop key (folder) entry. This is done in case there were other values in the Active Desktop key (folder).

Was there something else that you were wanting that was missing other than this?

alright lol i am sorry for giving you so much trouble i ran the reg key and it deleted the nochangingwallpaper from active desktop there is a default reg key there and i still have no desktop background option lol it has escaped me again thats all i want really is to get that back

Alexi,

I'm not sure what changes you have made that will now not let you undo it, but doing a System Restore with a restore point dated before this problem may fix it for you.

Thanks alot Brinks, system restore is turned off on my computer so I will just let the matter settle it doesn't seem like it is going to get fixed. I will let it be for now, but thanks for your help anyway.

It's no problem at all Alexi.

Other than a clean reinstall, you could do a Repair (upgrade) install. I would recommend backing up anything that you do not want to lose to be safe though.
