Desktop access problem

I am running Vista Home Premium, SP2, 64-bit OS on a Dell Inspiron 530S with 4 gig memory.
I’m having an intermittent desktop access problem. Sometimes (2 or 3 times a month) after exiting from sleep mode, I cannot access any desktop icons. Able to access all icons OK from the system tray. Reboot solves problem. Cannot find any information/errors about desktop in system event logs. Any ideas on what is causing this? Solutions?

OK,
Found Event ID 7 “bad block” errors. Shows up intermittently every few days. According to log, errors started sometime in June. To verify, I ran CHKDSK a couple of times but it came up clean. Is it possible that the Windows utility can find errors that chkdsk cannot?
Thanks!
