Vista Home Premium, 32bit: I've read the tutorials here on how to enable DEP (Data Execution Prevention), but there are a few problems. First of all, there are two locations where different DEPs applications can be changed or turned off/on. The first one resides in the 'Advanced System Settings' > 'Performance' > Data Execution Prevention' tab. The two choices here are: Use DEP for Windows programs & Use DEP for all programs. Mine was set by default to the former, but when changed to the latter, web pages would no longer load ("server not found" or "unable to load..." So I had to reset to the default level. Q: What causes the problem? Is there a solution?
Isn't my comp. better protected with DEP enabled for all programs?
DEP's second residence is in IE > 'Internet Options' > 'Advanced' tab under 'Security.' The options here are to check or not box saying 'Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks.' The tutorial here tells me to right click on the IE7 exe. file, but I can't find it. Right clicking on IE in menu brings up 'Run as Admin' prompt then redirects/connects to 'hp.desktop.aol.com.' But by the time I get to the 'Enable memory protection...' box, it's grayed out & won't let me check it. Research says this is disabled by default. This is a new desktop. Shouldn't this DEP be enabled as well? Please help the dummy.
