DEP error with Internet Explorer 8

I have been getting more frequent DEP errors/warnings. A window pops up to tell me that IE has stopped working because something in windows is protecting my PC from improper memory usage. Sometimes IE does actually quit; usually if I just 'x' out of the warning popup all is well. I have pursued the hints in the warning popup to try to correct this error, but I don't really understand what I can do safely. Here is the text of the error message when I click for more details.

What should I do? I am all up to date on Windows updates; I am running free AVG anti-virus v. 9.0.698. Running Vista Home Premium x64 on HP a6750t, IE version is in the error message above.

DEP (or data execution prevention) is a built in defense against virii using memory to launch their attack. It is in the system control panel>advanced section. Default is use only for built in. IE does have a problem and it appears that it is a dll giving the grief.

Two things I would do
Run a system file check to verify your system files
to run type cmd in search>right click and run as admin> type SFC /scannow
when its finished it will tell you the results. let us know what they are

If sfc is ok we can go into DEP and exclude IE from the programs dep monitors. In the panel there is an exclude box and you just need to put IE in it.

Instructions for DEP are here http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/120778-dep-enable-disable.html?ltr=D

hope this helps

I found this information about IEToolbar.dll, I think you must have installed the AVG Tool bar, you can try disabling that Toolbar and see whether it helps.

Edit: You are in safe hands and just ignore my post.

Ken, One of the things I did was to exclude iexplore.exe from the DEP-monitored programs. I did that yesterday but am still getting the same errors today. I had not done that system scan first, though.

brummyfan, Yes I do have th AVG toolbar which I installed with the AVG update to version 9 on 11/2. I haven't found any use for it so I will delete it and see what happens.

I will also do that system scan as Ken suggested and post my findings. Stay tuned.

I'd been getting the same symptoms, with the BT Yahoo toolbar enabled, for a couple of weeks. If I disabled the toolbar I had no problem, if I re-enabled it the problem came back.

Today an update for IE8 came in (KB976749) and also I re-installed the Yahoo toolbar. I don't know which of the two fixed the problem, but it seems to have gone away; I see that several of the setup options of the Yahoo bar have disappeared, maybe one of them was causing the problem and BT Yahoo upgraded and removed it, or maybe it was the Microsoft Update. I don't know which one fixed it, and I don't care as long as it doesn't come back.

I'm glad your problem went away...I got rid of the AVG toolbar but I still have the problem (altho I didn't reboot yet). However, I have been having this DEP problem as far back as Oct 13.

re: KB976749 I already installed that update on 11/3 (yesterday) so that's not the problem for me. The only other toolbar I have active is the Google one which I have had forever.

I wonder if anyone else is having these problems?

I'm having the same issue Marilyn is having (except I can ALWAYS X out the msg box and IE never closes). Very annoying. I have UAC enabled. I previously poked around before finding this forum and saw the instructions to turn DEP off for both specific applications and to turn it always off. Tried the former first and it didn't work. I subsequently set DEP to "Always Off" (and used the link Ken provided and punched in wmicOS Get...to confirm and it came back with "O", so it's off), but...I still get the same thing over and over and over again. Thoughts?

Ran scannow after posting. Got the following: "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them...Details included in CBS.Log"

I tried to open CBS.Log but got "Access Denied"

My last DEP error was on 11/14 - for the app "FotoSizer" which I have had on the PC for quite awhile. I added FotoSizer to the allowed apps for DEP not to check, and all is OK. No more DEPs since then.
