Dell Studio 1535 won't boot

My situation is similar to one posted earlier. The laptop goes through the normal boot sequence right up to the mouse pointer on a black screen, and hangs. If I leave the computer at the black screen and pointer it eventually goes to screen saver mode.

I have completely booted the machine using a flashdrive with linux to run an antivirus scan, but windows will not boot.

I have thought that a factory restore is in order, however, when I go to the advanced Boot options menu the "repair your computer" option isn't there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW this computer is not mine, it was brought to me to clean up...obviously needs more than a cleaning. :)

A couple more things, I have tried booting into safe mode with the same results. The other advanced options all resulted in the same situation.

Thinking I could run SFC if I got to a command prompt, but no love. This system hangs every time in the same place.

It sounds like the HD may have corrupted files. Have you experienced a sudden power shortage while the machine was running? I have no experience yet with laptops. But with a desktop machine you can get something similar if the power goes out, especially in the middle of a boot up.

Well, I don't know, the computer was brought to me for clean up. I assumed that I could plug it in and clean it up, they didn't say it wouldn't start.

I did pull the HDD out and put it in my BlacX drive docking station and ran a Scan Disk (from my WinXP machine) and it did not report any problems.

I would do a system restore, if I could get to it.

Thanks for the reponse

I think I have other issues. I think I have a hardware issue. Installed a different HDD and was going to load WinXP and in the setup process I get the BSOD, telling me windows detected a problem. So, I've talked to the people and they said not to worry, they would trash it.

Ok. Thanks for reporting the resolution. :)

I have experienced this in the past with both XP and Vista. Odds are it's a corrupt file(s). I resolve the issue by booting with a repair disc or install disk. You may not have that option being it isd not your personal computer. If you have a vista disc try booting from that. Being a Dell laptop it's restore is on a separate partition, good luck getting to that.

Hello Toms1,

In order to isolate the cause of failure, I would request you to run the Pre-BootSystem Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics tocheck the functionality of the hardware components installed in thesystem. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down theerror code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course ofaction.

Awaiting your response!
