The system restore seems like a good idea. I don't have any backups of files made. When I try to do system restore, I get
The disk OS (C
has errors. Windows has detected file system corruption on OS (C
. You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.
Check the disk for errors.
This is the orignal problem with the corrupt file.
When I chose
Check the disk for errors.
Check Disk OS (C
Check disk options: Automatically fix file system errors, Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Start,
Windows can't check the disk while it's in use. Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer? Schedule disk check.
I shut down computer (whole way down to power off). Restart and it boots into a dark screen, message about doing something, deleting a file with extension .scr, then boots into Vista.
Back to system restore, get the same message, go through it again.
This time boots straight to Vista.
Back to use system restore. Control Panel behaving a little odd. When I chose Backup and Restore Center/Use System Restore to fix problems and undo changes to Windows I get the system message to run the program, but then nothing happens. I open up Windows task manager and applications list none running. Open control panel/backup and restore center/Use system restore.. Message pops up System Restore Wizzard is already running. In the time it took me to type the above, the system restore window finally shows up (and appears in task manager as a 2nd System Restore application). Have to exit out of the first so the 2nd will run.
Again I choose to restore and the disk has errors message appears!@
Chose the option to just check for system file errors. Shut down, turn on. Boots straight into Vista.
Agin contol panel/backup and resore center/use system restore - but this time I wait. After 3 1/2 minutes I send the window to the task bar (miniturize with the _ button) and up pops Syster Restore window. Choose to restore and bam same message disk has errors/can't fix it because it's in use/fix on start up.
So let's try Safe mode boot? Same thing.
Boot menu for my Dell Studio Laptop has a repair option. Booted to a log in screen that looked like a primitive log in without the graphics. Then to a screen System Recovery Options with several options: Startup Repair, System Restore, Windows Complete PC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, Command Prompt, Dell Factory Image Restore.. Tried system restore - gave me a message that it was already running! So I chose command prompt.
Ran chkdsk and got:

Now try chkdsk /r (locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F fixes errors on the disk)
Get the message Cannot lock current drive. CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
I'm tired of this loop. Try N and use option /x forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid. Try chkdsk /x /r and get the same message!
Then I noticed the window for System Restore had opened behind the command window. So I chose to do system restore, got the error message, chose check system for errors - and surprise it began to run! Checking disk OS (C
!!!
Some problems were found and fixed.

(I don't know why the difference in total disk space from the first running of chkdsk above to the 2nd running, unless the corrections freed up some space or there is another partition the first one didn't check. Dell apparently has a restore partition on the disk seperate from the operating one so they can return the system to the factory level).
Now try System Restore again from the system recover options - takes a full minute to start. Now it works! Doing a system restore - but I'm afraid it won't restore my emails.
