Defragmenting?

Every time I launch the defrag tool, it says my file system is in good shape and there is no need to defragment. Consequently, I havent defragmented in over 3 years! Meanwhile, I'm having system dump crashes, computer is sluggish to open e-mail, certain pages, etc. Should one follow what the defrag tool tells them or defag on a regular basis? Should defragmenting help with the problems I'm having?

Not sure what case or cooling means. Could not find in any documentation. The keyboard is the standard that comes with the HP Slimline.
Vista defrag is on an automatic schedule. It defrags on a regular basis if needed or not. I have disabled automatic defrag on my computer and perform the service when necessary. Go to search by the start button, type task scheduler. In the left column of TS, click on the small arrows until you see Windows in Windows, look for defrag and then disable.
Read "edit or change a task" in this fine tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/12444-task-scheduler-create-new-task.html
Sounds like defrag will not help in your situation.
If you supply the following information, I will examine the file and give you help.

Get "Auslogics diskdefrag" a handy and quick tool for defragmenting.
Link : - filehippo.com/en/download_auslogics_disk_defrag

Set it on "Quick Defrag" option. It could take 15 to 40 min. depending on the fragmentation.
You can also set it on "Defrag & Optimize " Once in week for best results.ALL THE BEST xD

Vista defrags automatically so you really don't need to do it with more than one program.

I don't have it set to automatically defrag...Do you recommend changing the setting to automatic?

In my first post I suggested that you do not set it to automatic, I feel it is not needed on such a frequent basis; other opinions may differ.

It is unlikely that your problems are related to file fragmentation. Low to moderate levels of fragmentation have no significant effect on performance. NTFS has over the years shown that it is quite resistant to fragmentation. Not that the file system is resistant to becoming fragmented, but that this fragmentation just doesn't do much. Only in extreme cases would performance be significantly influenced. If the defrag tool shows no need for defragging then the level is low and of no consequence. Your problem lies elsewhere.

I have my system set for a defrag once a month. That is more often than needed but the schedule will not do it less often.

I agree. I would say check it once a month and defrag if recommended. It will not help to defrag when it isn't needed. I'd have to look but I think that the Microsoft default is one month.
