id like to say ty first off, this is a awesum site, and every1s willingness to help is amazing. these simple little problems to youall would take me forever to figure out, that said. im trying to use the tool in windows defender in order to find out what programs are starting first and try 2 make start up speed a lil better, problem is im useing microsoft security ess, so defender isnt on, is there a way to use the tool without turning microsoft securiuty off? any tips? sorry about the my specs thing, id need a book to figure out what that stuff meant, ty

If you have Security Essentials, Defender is turned off.
YOu can find out the start up programs by typing msconfig in search, in ms config go to start up.
You can also use a great little program, win patrol, it will give you start up and alot more information
There is also ccleaner that will give you start up programs
Probably the most popular is autoruns

There are so many great programs out there that will serve you needs, there is not need to get involved with defender and no you cannot use it while MSE is turned on.

When use MSE-Also check in services.msc that windows defender service is set to disable/manual (status should be "stop")
