CS / CS:S FPS Issue

Hi all,

I have this weird thing happening to my frames in-game. In CS 1.6, the net graph shows that I am getting 100fps constant, but the actual gameplay looks more like it is forced at 60 or 70. It looks choppy even though I'm pinned at 100 frames. Also, Source appears the same way, while I am getting 135+ fps it's still choppy and appears to be forced at a lower refresh rate.

My specs:

-Vista Business x64
-ASUS P5N32-E SLi nForce 680i
-Core 2 Duo E6300 OC @ 2.8GHz
-2GB Corsair XMS2 DD2-800 PC-6400 5-5-5-15 1T
-BFG 7900GTX OC
-Creative X-Fi Extreme Music
-CD/DVD drive
-DVD burner
-2 WD Caviar 250Gb 7200RPM 16MB cache

I already did the common stuff, downloading the hotfixes, forcing off refresh rates in the NVIDIA console, putting in command line parameters (for 1.6 [-freq 100]), setting fps_max to 101; all of it. After all this it still looks like a forced 60 frames and will not smooth out (even though it says that it's 100).

Help?

Which Monitor are you using? What Resolution? At what refresh rate?

Well I'm using a Dell E193FP 19" LCD monitor (5:4) at 1280x1024, 75Hz refresh rate. However, I know it's not the monitor, because in XP the frames are reported as 100fps and it's smooth as silk. It must be that the game is showing 100fps, but is still being forced at 60 for some reason.

It's really frustrating.

Check your RAM? Did you do any overclocking?

Check your PCI-E clock (make sure it is set to AUTO unless you know what you are doing).

When I played Company of Heroes the same thing happened to me (This was on full settings mind you). The game was extremely choppy and crash a couple of times.. BSOD etc.

Yeah, no overclocking of RAM yet. I made sure the voltages were correct to the manufacturer's specs (2.2V) and that the timings were set correctly (5-5-5-18 2T). PCIe is set at 100MHz (standard) in BIOS, and I know the RAM is fine from using the SANDRA Lite memory testing utility.

It's such a wild problem that I can't seem to figure out, so to avoid frustration I'm keeping my dual boot for the time being with XP (hopefully not too long though).

seems like you're skipping frames.

what happens if you run at 75fps and synchronise graphics to the video refresh?

do you ever see horizontal breaks in the image?

Everything was solved in SP1, thanks guys for your help.

However, see my thread about alt-tabbing in Vista please (Gaming Forum).
