Confused by "local only"

Im sure this has been posted here a bunch of time because it showed up in the search.

I am currently on my laptop that is having trouble.

I have no problem using an installed USB wireless adapter, but the atheros ar5b91 adapter that came with this laptop will NOT connect to the internet.

I keep getting the "local only" and I've tried all the things I've been able to find and to no avail.

I upgraded all my drivers and got the latest vista updates, yet this USB adapter I use on my other computer is the only thing that works for it.

All I get is "Unidentified Network" and the IPv4 and IPv6 both say "local" where as on this USB adapter the IPv4 says "internet" while the IPv6 says "local".

I've tried disabling them both seperately and nothing is working. I'm quite sure my current router is the wrt54g series, and works for all my other XP machines first try.

If anyone has any other suggestions or links to anything that can help me resolve this ridiculous conflict please post them.

Just doesn't make much sense to me that the USB one works great right now where the built in version can't get me online...

Thanks.

Have you tried referring to your manual?
What I meant by that is most laptops have a power saving feature wherein you can turn of specific devices such as the bluetooth and wireless card. These can be done on the Fn keys located next to the alt key I believe. Fn keys are used by pressing them with certain combinations. Like Fn key + F10.

But since it's detecting a local network it's probably on and working. So how about changing the network location to home by doing this Tutorial.

If that fails you could completely delete the said network connection and create a new one here is the tutorial.

Tell me if that helps.

I tried this and still nothing. It says my network is "not in use".

When I use the wireless adapter I have for my desktop in the laptop it sees the network on macafee(yes I played with all the settings for this too). But the second I remove the USB device it goes right back to not seeing it on macafee and not seeing the network.

All my information is entered correctly, the only query I have is I've never had to tell my router to "let" my computer on the internet...just put in the password and go.

I know vista is quite different than XP in that regards, is there anything special I'd have to do to my wrt54g linksys router to allow my new vista laptop online?

Like I said it lets my USB adapter on when its plugged into the computer...

Also a note, when I try to connect to the network with the built in adapter it "takes longer than usual to connect". Usually says "Limited to no connectivity" then goes back to just "local only".

There's got to be something I'm doing wrong/not doing.

I just had a similar problem with my desktop. Except my home network is wired and wireless. For the past three days every time I turn on my PC in the morning I would get the same thing as you. Local INTERNET only. First I checked all cables then checked all devices. Then I would reset/restart my battery backup. That seemed to work for awhile. Problem kept popping up. Finally to make a long story short, I went to my routers website for a chat session and I found out that my router settings had become corrupt. I had to reconfigure my router. Since then I have had no trouble connecting. Since yours is a laptop with built in wireless adapter. I would recommend that you uninstall driver from device manager and reboot. This will load the original driver from factory set up. Check connection. If it still happens try a system restore to an earlier date before problem started. If system restore does not fix problem as a last resort I would do a system reinstall.
