Computer Freeze/Lockup

Well I have had the computer within the past month and a half lockup 3 or 4 times. 1 has happened on vista and the others were on windows 7. I thought that win7 was the issue and i had various other reasons but i went back to vista. on win7 when it would lockup, the screen would go to a solid color and the sound was constant. With the one on vista, the video output ceased and the sound was a drone again. As well, with win7 i could soft reboot to fix, whereas with vista i had to hard reboot.

Well, im running prime95 right now, but other than that im not sure where to start as far as "fixing" whatever it is.
