Codec Problem!

I wanted a Codec pack for Vista Ultimate X64 and tried them all.

I ended up with K-light Codec pack & is working a treat it plays everything.

The only problem is which I’m sure can be solved, but has me stumped.

The Files that Play Fine

.wmv (Windows media file, WMP11)

.mpg

.MKV (Matroska Multimedia Container)

.flv (Flash File)

.asf (Advanced Streaming Format)

But when I click on an AVI file In WMP11 I get the animation (no picture) but i do get sound.
But if I right click on it and click Windows media Player (I have a choice of two)
Click the first Windows media Player the file plays fine this works for all AVI files

So I set this to default player & works for all AVI files but this means all the other files I mention don’t play.

Is there something I need to change in K-Light Codec pack or Is it because I have a choice of 2 Window Media Players?

Any suggestions’ would be greatly appreciated.

Uninstall codec packs..only install the codecs you need.

After you have uninstalled keep fingers crossed that everything will owrk.

never install wholesale codec packs.

Thanks for the reply Clevo.
I done what you said & removed the codec pack.
WMV,MPG,ASF Play fine in WMP 11

But the files that played with k-light codec pack don't play now which are

AVI - Get sound but no Picture & files that ask for codec point me to MPEG-4 (xvid) so I tried the one that windows point me to but it didn't work.

flv (Flash) get Sound but no picture have installed osflvsplitter + x264

What codec do I need to solve these file problems Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Flv: you probably need to update your version of Adobe Flash player

AVI: AVI axtentions are a "wrapper", an all encompassing video extension and although synonymous with uncompressed video files virtually any video file could have the extension AVI and in fact be compressed with with a variety of codecs.

As you found out, installing whoelsale codec can cause unwanted problems.

What you need to do is find out what codec was used for that particular AVI file and install that...you can remove it after you are done with that file.

Another option would be to convert it to some other video file type.Try using SUPER video converter, I believe it is still free but it is a powerful tool that converts video formats.

Ideally, you should be first checking with the source of the video file and finding out what codec was used to create that file. I appreciate it's not always possible but a quick e-mail to the creator of the video file is a hell of a lot better than messing around with your operating systems and possibly screwing something up bad enough to lose data or re-installation hassles.

Thanks for the reply Clevo. I got Flv files to work using osflvsplitter.

The reason it didn’t work before is as you said the corporate codec pack
getting rid of that was good advice.

I also use FFdshow which is really good.

WMV, MPG, FLV work fine with WM11

The only problem I have is with AVI files, I Mainly get a Picture but no sound & the ones that don't work asks for a MPEG-4 (XVID) codec.

I have downloaded xvid 1.1.3 after a lot of searching into the right one
but it's still not helping to a solution.

I then used Gspot to see if the codec was installed and it says it is, so I also used another AVI app that tells the codec used by the file & that comes back with the same results.

When I used XP which was a short time ago I used the FFdshow codec & WMP11 played everything.

It must be something to do with the FFdshow & a configuration setting? which I haven’t had time to explore yet because I’ve been busy with other Vista issues.

You wouldn’t have any idea of a setting in FFdshow that would resolve this by any chance.
