I'm running a 32 bit Vista Ultimate, just bought Civ 5, it installed fine, and i downloaded service pack 2 and a platform update to play the game in the recommended DirectX10 mode, and now everytime i try to load the game, a windows message pops up informing me that a problem has caused Civ 5 to stop working properly and must close. Im increasingly angry and frustrated that nothing i do helps and i've no clue how to resolve this. Can someone please help me so i dont have a $52.00 paperweight and an absurd amount of anger and frustration leading up to an office space moment?

Did you attempt to run it in Compatibilty Mode for Windows XP? Sometimes this works for games like that. Just a side note that to make sure you are hitting the minimum requirements and have a DX10 Card, usually a DX9 card wont work and you wont know it until something like this happens.

It took me hours before I could get mine to load to the main menu. I found out that the intro video causes problems, so I had to disable that. Also I changed my startup resolution, which wasn't supported by the game in the options menu. If you search around on the net, you will find tons of conversations about it, its a hot topic at the moment.
