Chinese Pirates Angry Over Microsoft’s Blackout Anti-Piracy Tool​

Never ones to shy away from an uphill battle, Microsoft has recently been taking new steps to combat software piracy in China. They’ve launched a program, euphemistically called “Windows Genuine Advantage,” which blacks out users' screens if it discovers that they’re running pirated Microsoft software.

In China, a country where a large majority of computers are running pirated software, this move has, predictably, caused quite an uproar.

The problem is most don't know they are buying grayware. The Chinese govt just starting going after pirates because they want in the WTO.

1 Billion people using non legal software could turn into a ton of extra money for them lol.

It's funny as hell because the piracy is so bad in China.

Perhaps with pirated copies rendered useless and potential higher profits from this, Microsoft would consider dropping the price a bit for us legal retail purchasers.

The reason why they pirate is the extortionate price of Windows.

A genuine, unpirated version of Windows costs over 1000 RMB, which is more than most Chinese make in a month. Contrast that with the 5 RMB (less than one US dollar) for the pirated version, and you’ve got a no-brainer.
