cheap Upgrade

hi to all of you, I'm new in the forum, but quite experienced reader.
I do not have a lot's of money, but i would like to make my old desktop more performing with vista ultimate x64.
I'm not a gamer and I use the pc mostly for picture and movies, office and web surf.

Actually I have XP pro with this config
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 630, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
Motherboard: Asus P5P800 SE (4 PCI, 1 AGP, DDR DIMM, Audio, Gigabit LAN)
Chipset Mobo: Intel Springdale i865PE
Video Card: Matrox Graphics Millennium G550 AGP (32 MB)
HD:
Maxtor 6L200M0 (200 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA)
ST3500320AS (500 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)

My question is what could change before installing vista ultimate x64?
I though this could be good:

Hi Zippeddu,

You left out the CPU. Your MOBO is a 775 socket which takes INtel CPU's, including Quad Core and Core 2 Duo

Your current CPU is too small to run most things, and won't fit the MOBO you have selected.

You could look at an AMD Dual Core and a different MOBO
ie

AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ Dual Core (2.6GHz) - AM2, HT 2000, 2x512kB L2 Cache, G1 Stepping, 65nm, 65W - Boxed 52.76euros

ASUS M2N68-AM Motherboard
AM2+, GeForce 7050PV + nForce 630a, HT 2000, 2x DDR2-1066, PCI-Ex16, 4x
SATA-II, RAID, GigLAN, 6Chl, VGA, mATX 49.28euros

Hi zippeddu, since you are not a gamer, I believe that P4 hyper-thread is not that much of a bottle neck for the system. It may be okay for your applications.

As an option apart from Norm's suggestion, you can go ahead and keep the P4 to see if it will handle what you will be doing and saving up money for a bigger one if need.

My previous PC with a P4 still doing in good speed for video encoding and graphic processing and it will handle all main stream games except in slightly lower setings, well except Crysis. Here is the spec of that HP for your reference.

Hi zippeddu, sorry couldn't respond earlier.

Being in the US, it is hard to deal with those price.

Anyway, the mother board you chose in your list is very good; fast, stable, easy to work with and problem free in general.

However, lots of people would suggest a bigger power supply, but I believe 500W is sufficient for a reliable brand. There are two 600W available in AC Computer which only the Xion is worth to look at but costs much more. It is up to you. Please keep in mind it is very important to have a clean and stable power supply. So can't be cheap with it.
