CD plays in XP but not in Vista

Please be gentle with me as I am a geriatric computer user, and though not an absolute novice I don't usually delve too far into their innards, so keep it simple.

I an using Vista Home Premium 32bit and my problem is I have 3 digital image CD's which play OK on my old XP computer but when I try to play them on my present Vista computer only 1 will play. All three were recorded by a friend of mine so I presume all are the same. I get the message with the two that will not play "Not responding" though the disk seems to be running from the sounds it makes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Many Thanks,
Josh

All I can find are these. From when he did them I would think he was using XP. What should I be looking for in Event Viewer?

Event ID: 51
Source: Cdrom
Type: Warning
Description: An error was detected on device <device> during a paging operation.

This event can occur if you have an offboard Ultra ATA controller and a CD-ROM drive attached, and autorun is enabled. When the CD is inserted, it may take some time before the CD spins up.

I would recommend Running MSE and Malwarebytes

See http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ For more Information

See Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com For more Information

Also Have you tried Detaching and attaching the Drive?

And could you check Device manger and Check for any Red crosses or Yellow Warnings? By any Drives

1. Open the Control Panel (Standard View).

2. Click on System and Maintenance and then System.

3. Under Tasks, click on Device Manager.

4. Provide administrative credentials when prompted.

Hope This Helps,
Josh

Thanks for all your troubles on my behalf Josh, I appreciate it. I have also subscribed to run this utility recently and it supposedly replaced any corrupted files, but the CD's did not run either before or after:-

Not sure if I have the drivers disk if I need to put it back as everything came preinstalled from Dell just after Vista was launched. I do have Dell's CD somewhere, but not sure what is on it. I had similar trouble after the first Vista Service Pack installed itself as my DVD's started pixellating or blocking up on vision. I got in touch with Microsoft windows Vista Support who told me to download a codec pack, but that did no good so I deleted it again and then found the DVD played OK in Windows Media Player, but I still could not get it to play in Windows Media Centre. The CD's in question don't play in either.

Don't worry the Drivers will be installed Via Online unless you do not have Internet connection

Hi Josh,

Sorry for the delay, but I have been having other problems that I presume are the Google Redirect Virus which nothing seems to remove at source since it keeps coming back after a while when supposedly deleted.

Anyway, Microsoft routine updates provided what seemed to be a new driver for my video card, but now one of my ABBA DVD's will not run either since I just get multicoloured blocks like large pixels on vision, plus it did nothing for the CD's either. I looked on Microsoft's site and found this:-

The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

Come to think of it the problem did start after the installation of a Vista Service Pack since I am sure the CD's etc ran OK when I first got the computer with Vista already installed. I tried the "Fix it" function in the link but it made no difference.

I found this on the Web regarding a similar problem. Is this how I uninstall the driver? I always worry about making things worse rather than better. If it is too complicated for me I will get a computer programmer friend to do it for me:-

"Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab - click
Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL - REBOOT
this will refresh the default driver stack."

Some talk about cleaning the laser lens, but I presume that if that was the problem it would not read any CD which it still does?

One problem solved. I tried a utility which told me my NVIDIA display driver was out of date so let NVIDIA detect which video card I had and downloaded their new driver and now my DVD works again, but not those two CD's where I still get the "not responding" message.
