Cd drive has disapeared

HI there :D

I have a problem with my cd drive that has disappeared from both my computer menu and the shortcut icon, I have looked at the device manager and my cd drive is listed, I have then looked at something called the bios and the drive is again listed. I tried to fix it by using the Microsoft fix tool, it said that this problem could not be fixed

I then tried another fix which entailed myself going into the registry and deleting the upper filters and lower filters, the lower filters were not there but I deleted the upper filters to no avail. I then tried to both do a system restore and to uninstall my anti virus and reinstall the anti virus software to no avail either. I then tried an anti virus scan but nothing appeared as a virus, I then tried to uninstall the cd drive in the device manager, windows vista reinstalled my cd software but it still has not appeared.

If anyone knows how to fix this then this will be most appreciated, I have windows vista home premium 32 bit

thanks :D

Thanks for replying, yes I went back to the 20th September 2010, this was before this issue happened, this issue happened in October, I have checked the device manager and my dvd/ cd drive is now not showing at all, I will try a disk check and repair and see what happens,

No need to reinstall, if you have the CD do the repair install.

HI richc46

I tried the disk check and repair, option, but alas my cd drive is still not showing, may I ask what the repair install means, I have recovery disks but not the Microsoft vista disk. As I have not heard of a repair install I thought I would ask, would I also need to back up all my files etc

thanks again for repying, also thank you to newtonx who has replied to this thread,

Sorry, the DVDs that come with the computer are not the same thing; you cannot do a repair install.
YOu can take the suggestion to reinstall, but that seems a bit drastic.
Dont know what else to say.

Right click on computer, select manage, and under disk managment in the bottom section make sure all devices have a drive letter. If they don't right click on your cd drive and select drive letter and path to give it a drive letter.

HI townsbg

thanks for replying to this thread, I have clicked on manage and then disk management, it shows my hard drive but the cd drive is not listed, I have right clicked the cd drive shortcut on the desktop, I have clicked on properties, the shortcut tab in this menu has the following information

TARGET: E:\
START IN (THIS BOX IS BLANK)
SHORTCUT KEY: NONE

I am not to sure how to assign a drive letter, if this info gives any clue at then let me know

thanks again for replying

If it doesn't show up in computer managment you can't give it a drive letter. You said that it shows up in device manager. If it still does right click on the entry and select uninstall. Once it has uninstalled and no longer shows up in device manager reboot and cross your fingers.

Hi townsbg

it did show up in the device manager around a week ago, it then disappeared from the device manager in the last couple of days, that was the weird thing about it,

The only thing that may fix it seems to be a reinstall of the operating system, as my laptop is around 4 years old I may opt for a new laptop :D

thanks for your help and advice, :D

Does it show up in the bios? If not you probably have a hardware problem which could be with the board, the drive, or the cable. If it does then you have some strange OS issue which would probably be fixed by a reinstall but it's up to you where to go from here. Thanks for the rep.;)

HI townsbg

Last time I checked, the cd drive did show up in the bios, I will check again to make sure, I will either try a reinstall using recovery disks or opt for a new laptop, thanks for the advice,

thanks :D
