Cant update to SP2

So ive been trying to update to SP2 (KB948465) on my HP Pavilion dv4 laptop and i cant do it. When it starts to update it says " A system error prevented the service pack from installing. Please download and run the **Check for System update readiness** tool at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=122602"

I did this and used this rediness tool, Download details: System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [January 2010] and after installing the Hotfix thing te update for SP2 still didnt work. Im using the windows update.

How would i go about installing SP2? I think im missing an important file or something.

Hello,

There are two things you should do, run SFC and upload the checkSUR log files. To do this, press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue. Type "cmd" without the quotes and press enter. When Command Prompt open, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes, noting the space and press enter. When it has finished after about 15 minutes, if integrity violations are found, upload the log files. If you can, please parse the log files and upload sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop, but do not worry too much if you cannot. If we can get our hand on that log file, then we may be able to give you exact fixing instructions. First, go to the "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" directory and zip up everything in it. Then upload that zip file here. To zip them up, highlight everything in that directory, right click on one of them and choose:
Send To > Compressed (zipped) archive. Then upload that zip here.

Try installing from DVD.

its worth checking if hp have thier own version of sp2, there can be conflicts between file versions and the bios tagging. it should also update the hiddern recovery partition as well.

I cannot absolutely guarantee it, but it has a high chance of success and will cause no harm, so it is definitely worth a try.

Ok, so i got caught up the few weeks and i tried it out. I didnt get very far because when i do the sfc command it replies that im not an administrator. So i checked the settings and i am infact an administrator. Where do i go from here?

EDIT: Also Kasperskey is acting up and wont show my anything but a blank screen. I tried to uninstall/install it with the CD but i says i need IE 5 or higher. I have IE7 and im currently using google chrome. Why does my computer hate me? I think i have a virus....

I am sorry to hear you have had all these problems. Can I just confirm that you used the Run dialogue, not any other method of opening Command Prompt as this opens it as an Administrator.

Also, if you really think you have a virus, can I please ask you to run HiJackThis 2.0.4 and create a log file. Then upload or paste inline that log file. Thanks! HijackThis - Trend Micro USA

Ive tried all the suggestions about installing the update readiness tool and trying to install vista sp2 with no success. I then turned off my screen saver,thinking maybe it wasnt installing because it kept interfering with the process. I thought I would give it anouther go on trying to install the readiness tool,and success! I then tried to install vista sp2, which was also successful.Although these processes take a little time,you might try that.

Please start a NEW thread of your own, and attach the CheckSUR.log file to your post - also, run the following tests while waiting for a response....



Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type
CHKDSK C: /R
and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.
The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!
After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
At the Command prompt, type
SFC /SCANNOW
and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to a reply to your new thread.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.
