Can't uninstall Norman AV software in Vista Home Edition

Hi, can someone help you pls?

I have been using Norman internet security software for just over a year. Last week, I decided to purchase the AVG internet security software (2-year license) at a retail shop to replace Norman, which had just expired in its 1-year license.

I tried to uninstall Norman before installing AVG from "Control Panel->Unstall a program" and it stated the status as "Successful". However the Norman sub-folder is still in the "Program File" folder. So I deleted the Norman sub-folder manually.

Now, when I tried to install AVG, it detected that my laptop is still installed with Norman AV and recommended that I uninstall it before proceeding with the installation. I went to check Microsoft Internet Security Center and found that it still states that the alert for Norman malware is still active.

How can I do a clean uninstall from Microsoft Security Center before I go ahead with installing the AVG software? I am totally frustrated with this and my laptop is currently not being protected.

Any suggestions or help is appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I had the same problem when I used control panel but when I used the uninstall program found through the start - all programs-symantec- norton uninstall. I could add another security program. Control panel doesn't remove it properly.

Hi friend, thanks for your comments.

I went to the Norman web site and downloaded the uninstall program, executed it and it said "successful". However, I am still having the same problem at Microsoft Security Center as before.

I wonder if this is a problem prevalent with Norman users.

Further help is appreciated.

Hi MarshallMoore, thanks for your comments.

My AV software is Norman and I don't think it is a Symantec product, which has the Norton product.

Norman has no office in Singapore and I dunno who to approach for help.

Sorry I've not heard of Norman before, But is there an unistall button if you navigate to Norman using the start orb - all programs, etc.

Got another idea. Look inside the Norman folder for an uninstall.exe via computer-c: - programs - etc. whatever the path is to the Norman folder.

Hi, thanks. I've tried doing that but it couldn't just uninstall completely. I suspect it's with the Microsoft Security Center. Any1 knows how to manually clear the malware configuration at Security Center please?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

It looks like the Security Center cache is probably stuck. Pretty easy to reset, just follow these instructions:

Go to "Start->run..." and type "services.msc".
Find "Windows Management Instrumentation" Service and stop it.
Then go to C:\Windows\System32\wbem and delete the "Repository" folder. ("C:\Windows..." will need to be changed if you did not install windows to it's default location)
Reboot.
